In this video, Jorge from Alarm Grid offers an overview of the Qolsys Hardwire 16-S. The Qolsys Hardwire 16-S is a wired to wireless converter. By using this module, you can takeover an existing hardwired system and use nearly all of the hardwired sensors with a compatible wireless 319.5 MHz system.

The way that the Hardwire 16-S works is fairly simple. Hardwired sensors connect directly with the Qolsys Hardwire 16-S module. The module itself enrolls with the panel as a hardwired translator. The module is then able to send 319.5 MHz signals to the panel on the behalf of the sensors. Each sensor will need to be programmed to a wireless zone. Even though these are hardwired sensors, the system will treat them as though they are wireless 319.5 MHz sensors. The module supports both Normally Open (NO) and Normally Closed (NC) hardwired sensors. You can even use an on-board siren relay for a hardwired siren if you have a compatible Qolsys IQ Panel 2 System.

When using the Qolsys IQ Hardwire 16-S with a Qolsys IQ Panel 2 System, the module will communicate using rolling code encryption. This will make the communication more secure than if you were using a non-encrypted device. In other words, it will be more difficult to hack or takeover the sensors. However, if you use this module with a different 319.5 MHz system, then the wireless will not be encrypted. One other important thing to note about the Qolsys IQ Hardwire 16-S is that you cannot use life-safety sensors with the module. This includes devices like smoke detectors and carbon monoxide sensors. If you are trying to use those devices with your system, then your best option is to get wireless 319.5 MHz life-safety sensors. There are plenty of compatible wireless life-safety modules that can be used in this manner.
