Powering On the DSC PowerSeries NEO Security System

In this video, Michael from Alarm Grid shows you how to provide power to a DSC PowerSeries NEO Security System. Like most alarm panels, the DSC PowerSeries NEO receives primary power from a plug-in transformer and backup power from a battery unit. The transformer for the DSC PowerSeries NEO is rated at 16.5VAC, 40VA. The backup battery is typically either a 12VDC, 4Ah model or a 12VDC, 7Ah model.

Most of the time, the NEO receives its power from the plug-in AC transformer. AC power provides a reliable power source that the panel can count on in the majority of situations. But there many be situations where the panel can lose AC power. The most common examples are that the transformer has become unplugged from the outlet, or the building is experiencing an electrical outage. In any case, once the panel loses AC power, it will automatically switch to the battery backup to stay running.

The backup battery for the PowerSeries NEO slowly stores power over time, as it draws a small amount of power from the primary transformer connection with the panel. This allows the backup battery to be capable of providing current to the panel as soon as a power outage occurs. However, it is important to understand that the backup battery can only keep the panel running temporarily. That is why it is important to restore transformer power to the panel as soon as possible.

Another important factor to consider regarding a backup battery is that it will slowly begin to lose its ability to store a charge over time. Eventually, the battery will no longer be able to store enough current to power the system, and it will need to be replaced with a new one. Also keep in mind that most DSC PowerSeries NEO Systems will require one or more auxiliary power supplies to power all of their connected equipment. This equipment includes an alarm monitoring communicator, as well as other powered devices like keypads and powered security sensors.
