Ukrainian T-64BV tanks receive 3rd generation optical and guidance devices
The main battle tank of the Ukrainian army T-64BV has received updates in recent weeks and is starting tests to verify its effectiveness. The news was announced by the largest state defense company in Ukraine.
The modernization of the T-64BV was carried out by the Kharkiv Armored Plant, which is part of the Ukroboronprom. The tank is now equipped with new third-generation optical and guidance devices, an anti-accumulation screen on the rear grille, and a rubber guard on the turret. In addition, the combat vehicle's fuel system has been upgraded and additional armor protection of the fuel tanks has been installed.

The T-64BV is designed to break through all types of fortified enemy positions, as well as for military support of mechanized ground forces. Tanks managed to overcome firing points, armored vehicles, manpower.

Herman Smetanin, director of the Kharkiv Armored Plant, said that the updated T-64BV already has an advanced communication system. The old Russian radio stations have been removed and the new navigation system (internal and external) complies with NATO standards.

Modernization around old tanks

Ukraine produces the T-84 tank. However, the government decided to upgrade the T-64, as it would be cheaper than the T-84. The T-64 tank is a Russian-Ukrainian production from the Cold War and Soviet Union era. According to unconfirmed information, more than 2,200 T-64 tanks are in service with the Ukrainian ground forces. The government has decided that at least 100 of these 2,200 tanks need to be upgraded to the T-64BV version.

This modernization began in 2017. In addition to the latest upgrades, over the years the tank has received NBC protection, passive and explosive jet shields, automatic fire suppression systems. Attention was also paid to propulsion, as the T-64BV received an engine with 850 horsepower. However, the new engine failed to resolve some of the tank's problems. Still relatively slow and less maneuverable. The reason: the new engine failed to keep up with the increased weight of the additional bumper.
