I. Cultivate Family Government - 1 Peter 3:7

A. Dwelling together by the love of Christ - standing as the head of the family government
1. Loving as Christ has loved us - Ephesians 5:25-29
2. The standard we measure ourselves against is our Lord Jesus Christ
B. There is a debt we owe - 1 Corinthians 7:3

II. Dwell with Understanding - 1 Peter 3:7

A. A deeper more personal knowledge of our wives
B. Acquiring that knowledge - James 1:19
1. The jokes would have you believe that understanding women is an impossible accomplishment
2. You’ve been given two ears but one tongue - be quick to listen
a. Listen intently with the goal to understand
b. Set aside the Mr. Fixit tool kit in order to give first priority to understanding
3. When we reverse the order, quick to speak, slow to listen, we will often be quick to wrath

III. Giving Honor as Fellow Heirs - 1 Peter 3:7

A. The expression of honor can take many forms
1. It is rooted in the recognition of our standing in Christ
2. It understands the weaker vessel - 1 Timothy 2:13-14
B. The downside if husbands do not cultivate their own family government
1. God hears the prayers of those who do not retain sin in their hearts - Psalm 66:18
2. It is sin when husbands do not give honor and understanding to their wives.
