Sunday Longplay - Mario Party 1 (N64) - Mini-Game Island

This week on Sunday Longplay, it's been a long time since I played a Nintendo 64 game on my channel, but with the launch of both Mario Party Superstars and the Nintendo 64 emulator for Nintendo Switch Online, it got me interested in revisiting the Mario Party franchise's roots. So let's dive into the game where the friendship-destroying franchise all began, Mario Party on the N64!

Mario Party at its core is a board game with interspersed mini-games, and the goal is to have the most stars at the end of a pre-determined amount of turns to become the Superstar. Players roll dice and travel around the board through different branching paths, and after each player has taken their turn, a mini-game ensues based on the color spaces where each player landed. Blue spaces give you three coins if you land on them, while red spaces take away 3 coins. If all four players land on the same color space, a 4-Player free-for-all mini-game will play. If three players land on one color and the fourth player lands on the other color, a 1-vs-3 mini-game will play (these usually give the lone player an advantage in some way). If two players land on blue and the other 2 land on red, then a 2-vs-2 team battle mini-game will play. These mini-games are where the bulk of a player's coins will come from, and you'll need as many as you can get, because coins are how you get stars.

Each Mario Party game also has a mode that let's you practice the mini-games by themselves, either in the mini-game shop or in a separate adventure mode. In Mario Party 1, that mode is called Mini-Game Island. Here, you go on an adventure that spans all 50 mini-games in the game. Beat all of them to unlock a special bonus mini-game!
