The Reid's Assassin is an old patter from the Clyde River in Scotland. It is similar to the Bradshaw's Fancy but I do not know which came first. I found it an interesting pattern because of the similarity plus it is a good example of creating a fly with substituted materials. Often, as tiers we do not have the hackle, the floss or the silk thread that they pattern calls for but we do have something else that will work. There is nothing wrong with substituting materials in order to create the pattern, get it in the water and have some fun. That's what it is all about.
