Mickey Mantle’s Life in Commerce, Oklahoma (LITTLE MICK!)

Mickey Mantle, is considered by many, to be the greatest switch hitter of all time. His father, Mutt Mantle, began training his son for the Major Leagues when Mickey was still in the cradle. A poor miner, Mutt wanted to save his son from the miseries of poverty, and working in the mines too. With the help of his father, Charlie Mantle, from the age of five on, Mickey had batting practice with his father and grandfather from 4 PM until dark. Mutt did not do anything that could endanger Mickey’s training. He was discovered by Ted Greenwade, a Yankee scout from Willard, MO, in 1947, when Mickey was playing for the Baxter Springs, Whiz Kids. Part 2 of this video will follow his professional baseball career with the New York Yankees, and I tour the home Mickey Mantle built for his family in 1958 in Commerce. To my knowledge no one has ever toured this home. The same family that purchased it from Mickey in 1960, still own it.
