In China more than 100,000 people, mostly students, defied government orders and took to the streets to demand reform. In Beijing demonstrators pushed past police to enter Tiananmen Square. The Chinese government considers how to restrict the protests.

In Moscow Communist Party General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev answers his critics who have argued that his reforms have gone too far too fast. To the Central Committee he says that the reforms have not gone far enough and that the Soviet workers have forgotten how to work.
