In China more than 100,000 people, mostly students, defied government orders and took to the streets to demand reform. In Beijing demonstrators pushed past police to enter Tiananmen Square. The Chinese government considers how to restrict the protests. In Moscow Communist Party General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev answers his critics who have argued that his reforms have gone too far too fast. To the Central Committee he says that the reforms have not gone far enough and that the Soviet workers have forgotten how to work.

News from April 26, 1989. The United States Supreme Court hears arguments in the abortion case from the State of Missouri called "Webster v. Reproductive Health Services" on the constitutionality of Roe v. Wade from 1973. Both pro- and anti- abortion activists plan protests across the nation after gathering at the Supreme Court building on this day. Also, Lucille Ball, comedian, actress and studio executive died this day at the age of 77.
