Dogs and their people.
This study focuses on the human-dog relationship and the dog-related consumer experiences that come from such relationships. The central construct in this research is known as dog companionship. We define this construct as following and associating with someone's dog and the relationship between owner and dog that results from such interaction.
Approximately 61 million dogs are pets in the United States ( American Pet Association, 2002 ). A growing body of evidence suggests that dog owners (a term used here because of the lack of a better one to capture the dog-human bond and because of its common usage and meaning) are paying more attention to and spending more money on their dogs . Apart from several qualitative studies, however, few consumer surveys make it easier to understand this growing market. Dogs play a significant role in the hearts and lives of their owners. Many dog owners report attachments to their dogs that are as strong as attachments to their best friends, children, and spouses ( American Pet Association, 2002 ). Interestingly, dog owners are more likely to anthropomorphize their pets than cat owners.
