☢️ Commercial Nuclear Reactors by Country 1954-2021

This bar chart race shows the annual numbers of commercial and operational grid connected nuclear energy producing reactors, by country/territory from 1954 to 2021.

Note that number of nuclear reactors is not the same as number of power plants. Many power plants have two or more reactors. Usually not constructed and commissioned simultaneously.
The category Shut Down also includes those destroyed and inoperable.
Unfinished, are constructions started but never completed for various reasons. The fate of some few are still unknown, and added to 2021. Planned constructions, but not started, are excluded.
Under Construction are those annually constructed until operation, and unfinished projects until they officially stopped the completion.
Japan suspended a significant number of operations in the later years. These are not counted as operational in this video, but may resume operation in the future.
For comparison with existing countries today, the former republics of Soviet Union, Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia are shown.
