Spanish 101 - Learn the Different Uses of the Verb ESTAR in Spanish - Spanish With Profe
In this video you will learn how to use the verb "estar".
"Estar" is used to talk about emotions, conditions, location, and to talk about the present progressive in Spanish.
Yo estoy (I am)
tú estás (you are)
él, ella, usted está (he, she, you formal is)
nosotros/as estamos (we are)
ellos, ellas, ustedes están (they, you all are)
Estar - emotion
Tú estás feliz. (You are happy.)
Estar - condition
Nosotros estamos cansados. (We are tired.)
La puerta está cerrada. (The door is closed.)
Estar -location
Ellos están en la clase. (They are in class.)
Present Progressive: to form the present progressive, we use "estar" + ar= ando and -er/-ir = iendo
In the present progressives, there is no stem-changing in the following endings -ar and -er.

In the present progressive, there is stem-changing for verbs ending in -ir.
o=u ; e=i, e=i
You must use the helping verb "estar" conjugated according to the person doing the action and convert the given verb into the "-ing" form by dropping its original ending -ar/-er/-ir and applying the new "-ing" form "ando" for verbs ending in -ar and "iendo" for verbs ending in -er/-ir
escribir: escrib -ir (escrib + iendo)
Yo estoy escribiendo. (I am writing)
cantar: cant -ar (cant + ando)
Tú estás cantando. (You are singing.)
comer: com -er (com + iendo)
Ellos están comiendo. (They are eating).
dormir is a stem-changing verb o=u
dormir: dur + iendo
Yo estoy durmiendo. (I am sleeping.)
Tú estás durmiendo. (You are sleeping.)
él, ella, usted está durmiendo (he, she, you formal is sleeping)
nosotros/as estamos durmiendo. (We are sleeping.)
ellos, ellas, ustedes están durmiendo (they, you all are sleeping)
As you can see in the present progressive there are no irregular verbs in the -ing form.
There are stem-changing verbs but only those ending in -ir.
