In this video you will learn when to use SER or ESTAR in Spanish.
Ser and Estar both mean to be, but in Spanish they both serve a different purpose.

Uses of:
"Ser" to talk about nationality or origin.
Yo soy de los Estados Unidos. (I am from the USA.)
Yo soy estadounidense. (I am American.)

"Ser" to talk about profession or occupation
Yo soy profesora. ( I am a professor.)

"Ser" to talk about characteristics of people or things
Él es amable. (He is kind.)

"Ser" to talk about generalizations
Es bueno beber agua. (It is good to drink water.)

"Ser" for possession
Este es mi canal. (This is my channel.)

"Ser" to talk about what something is made of
Esta blusa es de algodón. (This blouse is made out of cotton.)

"Ser" to talk about time
¿Qué hora es? Son las once. (What time is it? ) (It is eleven.)

"Ser" to talk about when or where an event happens
La fiesta es en la casa de John. (The party is at John's house.)
La fiesta es a las nueve de la noche. (The party is at nine pm.)

Uses of :
"Estar" to talk about location or spatial relationships
Washington está en los Estados Unidos. (Washington is in the USA.)
California está al lado de Oregon. (California is next to Oregon.)

"Estar" to talk about health
Yo estoy bien. ( I am doing well.)

"Estar" to talk about physical states and conditions.
El conductor está cansado. (The driver is tired.)
El libro está abierto. (The book is open.)

"Estar" to talk about emotional states
Yo estoy feliz. (I am happy.)

"Estar" to talk about some weather conditions
Hoy está nublado. (Today is cloudy.)

"Estar" to talk about the progressive
Estoy enseñando español. (I am teaching Spanish.)

"Estar" vs "Ser" with some adjectives
Depending on the verb that you use, you will convey a different idea

listo or lista (smart) with "Ser"
Él es listo. (He is smart)

listo or lista. (to be ready) with "Estar"
Ella está lista. (She is ready.)

verde (green) with "Ser" (green as in the color green)
La pera es verde. (The pear is green.)

verde (ripe) with "Estar"
Las peras están verdes. (The pears are not ripe.)
