Spanish 102 - Learn How to Use the Imperfect Tense in Spanish El Imperfecto Spanish With Profe

In this video you will learn how to use the imperfect tense in Spanish. The imperfect or el imperfecto is another form of the simple past in Spanish.

Use the imperfecto to talk about ongoing actions in the past, to talk about repetitive actions in the past, to provide background information on habitual things in the past.

The imperfect is what you "Used to do..".
There are no stem-changing verbs in the imperfecto.
There are only three irregular verbs: Ser, Ir a, and Ver.

Ser= (to be) (I used to be)
yo era
tú eras
él, ella, usted era
nosotros/as éramos
ellos, ellas, ustedes eran

Ir a = (to go) (I used to go)
yo iba a
tú ibas a
él, ella, usted iba a
nosotros/as íbamos a
ellos, ellas, ustedes iban a

ver= to see (I used to see)
yo veía
tú veías
él, ella, usted veía
nosotros/as veíamos
ellos, ellas, ustedes veían

Use the following ending for -ar

yo -aba
tú -abas
él, ella, usted -aba
nosotros/as -ábamos
ellos, ellas, ustedes -aban

Use the following endings for -er/-ir
yo -ía
tú -ías
él, ella, usted -ía
nosotros/as -íamos
ellos, ellas, ustedes -ían

(ser, jugar)
Cuando yo era niña, yo jugaba con muñecas. (When I was a child, I used to play with dolls.)

(ir a)
Nosotros íbamos a la playa todos los veranos. (We used to go to the beach every summer.)

(vivir, pasar)
Cuando vivíamos en California pasábamos mucho tiempo con nuestros familiares y amigos.
(When we used to live in California we would spend a lot of time with our family members and friends.)

(comer)
Antes ellos comían carne. (Before they used to eat meat.)

(tener, ver)
Cuando tenía diez años siempre veía a mis abuelos los fines de semana. (When I was ten years old I would always see my grandparents on the weekend.)
