Cumbres And Toltec Train Ride, June 2018

In June 2018, the family and I traveled west to visit the Grand Canyon. Worked into the travel plans was a stop at the Durango and Silverton. But wildfires in that region of the country had suspended all steam operation. So I opted to visit the other famous tourist line in the area.

This turned out to be a great experience. We rode the Cumbres and Toltec out of Chama on a one day, out and back trip to Osier, CO. The steams engines on the C&T are gorgeous. The operation is extremely well organized and efficient. And the line is above average for scenery and the views a railfan can get of the locomotive from the train. The narrow gauge track allows for tight turns, and there is comparatively little foliage next to the tracks to block your shot.

If you are in northern New Mexico or southern Colorado and looking for a railfanning experience, do check out the Cumbres and Toltec.

In addition to this video, I have published a bunch of photos from this trip to my web site. The URL is http://dlamb15.com/wo/gallery/categorylist.asp?seq=131R&usn=0
