Below is the full transcript of the 1979 broadcast from the CBS investigative news program 60 Minutes on government propaganda around the 1976 swine flu scare. The program was aired on Sunday, November 4, 1979. Transcript: MIKE WALLACE: The flu season is upon us. Which type will we worry about this year, and what kind of shots will we be told to take? Remember the swine flu scare of 1976? That was the year the U.S. government told us all that swine flu could turn out to be a killer that could spread across the nation, and Washington decided that every man, woman and child in the nation should get a shot to prevent a nation-wide outbreak, a pandemic. Well 46 million of us obediently took the shot, and now 4,000 Americans are claiming damages from Uncle Sam amounting to three and a half billion dollars because of what happened when they took that shot. By far the greatest number of the claims - two thirds of them are for neurological damage, or even death, allegedly triggered by the flu shot. We pick up the story back in 1976, when the threat posed by the swine flu virus seemed very real indeed. PRESIDENT GERALD FORD: This virus was the cause of a pandemic in 1918 and 1919 that resulted in over half a million deaths in the United States, as well as 20 million deaths around the world. WALLACE: Thus the U.S. government's publicity machine was cranked into action to urge all America to protect itself against the swine flu menace. (Excerpt from TV commercial urging everyone to get a swine flu shot.) One of those who did roll up her sleeve was Judy Roberts. She was perfectly healthy, an active woman, when, in November of 1976, she took her shot. Two weeks later, she says, she began to feel a numbness starting up her legs. JUDY ROBERTS: And I joked about it at that time. I said I'll be numb to the knees by Friday if this keeps up. By the following week, I was totally paralyzed. WALLACE: So completely paralyzed, in fact, that they had to operate on her to enable her to breathe. And for six months, Judy Roberts was a quadriplegic. The diagnosis: A neurological disorder called "Guillain-Barre Syndrome" - GBS for short. These neurological diseases are little understood. They affect people in different ways. As you can see in these home movies taken by a friend, Judy Roberts' paralysis confined her mostly to a wheelchair for over a year. But this disease can even kill. Indeed, there are 300 claims now pending from the families of GBS victims who died, allegedly as a result of the swine flu shot. In other GBS victims, the crippling effects diminish and all but disappear. But for Judy Roberts, progress back to good health has been painful and partial. Now, I notice that your smile, Judy, is a little bit constricted. ROBERTS: Yes, it is. WALLACE: Is it different from what it used to be? ROBERTS: Very different, I have a – a greatly decreased mobility in my lips. And I can't drink through a straw on the right-band side. I can't blow out birthday candles. I don't whistle any more, for which my husband is grateful. WALLACE: It may be a little difficult for you to answer this question, but have you recovered as much as you are going to recover? ROBERTS: Yes. This - this is it. WALLACE: So you will now have a legacy of braces on your legs for the rest of your life? ROBERTS: Yes. The weakness in my hands will stay and the leg braces will stay. WALLACE: So Judy Roberts and her husband have filed a claim against the U.S. government. They're asking $12 million, though they don't expect to get nearly that much. Judy, why did you take the flu shot? ROBERTS: I'd never taken any other flu shots, but I felt like this was going to be a major epidemic, and the only way to prevent a major epidemic of a - a really deadly variety of flu was for every body to be immunized. WALLACE: Where did this so called "deadly variety of flu", where did it first hit back in 1976? It began right here at Fort Dix in New Jersey in January of that year, when a number of recruits began to complain of respiratory ailments, something like the common cold. An Army doctor here sent samples of their throat cultures to the New Jersey Public Health Lab to find our just what kind of bug was going around here. One of those samples was from a Private David Lewis, who had left his sick bed to go on a forced march. Private Lewis had collapsed on that march, and his sergeant had revived him by mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. But the sergeant showed no signs of illness. A few days later, Private Lewis died. ROBERTS: If this disease is so potentially fatal that it's going to kill a young, healthy man, a middle-aged schoolteacher doesn't have a prayer. WALLACE: The New Jersey lab identified most of those solders' throat cultures as the normal kind of flu virus going around that year, but they could not make out what kind of virus was in the culture from the dead soldier, and from four others who were sick. So they sent those cultures to the Federal Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, Georgia, for further study. A few days later they got the verdict: swine flu. But that much-publicized outbreak of swine flu at Fort Dix involved only Private Lewis, who died, and those four other soldiers, who recovered completely without the swine flu shot. ROBERTS: If I had known at that time that the boy had been in a sick bed, got up, went out on a forced march and then collapsed and died, I would never have taken the shot. DR DAVID SENCER: The rationale for our recommendation was not on the basis of the death of a - a single individual, but it was on the basis that when we do see a change in the characteristics of the influenza virus, it is a massive public-health problem in the country. WALLACE: Dr David Sencer, then head of the CDC - the Center of Disease Control in Atlanta - is now in private industry. He devised the swine flu program and he pushed it. WALLACE: You began to give flu shots to the American people in October of '76? DR SENCER: October 1st. WALLACE: By that time, how many cases of swine flu around the world had been reported? DR SENCER: There had been several reported, but none confirmed. There had been cases in Australia that were reported by the press, by the news media. There were cases in - WALLACE: None confirmed? Did you ever uncover any other outbreaks of swine flu anywhere in the world? DR SENCER: No WALLACE: Now, nearly everyone was to receive a shot in a public health facility where a doctor might not be present, therefore it was up to the CDC to come up with some kind of official consent form giving the public all the information it needed about the swine flu shot. This form stated that the swine flu vaccine had been tested. What it didn't say was that after those tests were completed, the scientists developed another vaccine and that it was the one given to most of the 46 million who took the shot. That vaccine was called "X-53a". Was X-53a ever field tested? DR SENCER: I-I can't say. I would have to - WALLACE: It wasn't DR SENCER: I don't know WALLACE: Well, I would think that you're in charge of the program DR SENCER: 1 would have to check the records. I haven't looked at this in some time. WALLACE: The information form the consent form was also supposed to warn people about any risk of serious complications following the shot. But did it? ROBERTS: No, I had never heard of any reactions other than a sore arm, fever, this sort of thing. WALLACE: Judy Roberts' husband, Gene, also took the shot. GENE ROBERTS: Yes, I looked at that document, I signed it. Nothing on there said I was going to have a heart attack, or I can get Guillain Barre, which I'd never heard of. WALLACE: What if people from the government, from the Center for Disease Control, what if they had indeed, known about it, what would be your feeling? JUDY ROBERTS: They should have told us. WALLACE: Did anyone ever come to you and say, "You know something, fellows, there's the possibility of neurological damage if you get into a mass immunization program?" DR SENCER: No WALLACE: No one ever did? DR SENCER: No WALLACE: Do you know Michael Hattwick? DR SENCER: Yes, uh-hmm. WALLACE: Dr Michael Hattwick directed the surveillance team for the swine flu program at the CDC. His job was to find out what possible complications could arise from taking the shot and to report his findings to those in charge. Did you know ahead of time, Dr Hattwick that there had been case reports of neurological disorders, neurological illness, apparently associated with the injection of influenza vaccine? DR MICHAEL HATTWICK: Absolutely WALLACE: You did? DR HATIWICK: Yes WALLACE: How did you know that? DR Hattwick: By review of the literature. WALLACE: So you told your superiors - the men in charge of the swine flu immunization program - about the possibility of neurological disorders? DR RATTWICK: Absolutely WALLACE: What would you say if I told you that your superiors say that you never told them about the possibility of neurological complications? DR HAJTWICK: That's nonsense. WALLACE: Did you get permission to use their names in your campaign? DR SENCER: I do not know. WALLACE: Mary, did you take a swine flu shot? MARY TYLER MOORE: No, I did not. Even if we pay a few people a few thousand dollars that might not have deserved it, I think justice requires that we promptly pay those people who do deserve it. "The duty we owe to one another to tell the truth and to protect our fellow citizens from excesses like these is one we can never walk away from." Saying "our government failed in that duty," he apologized "to all the American people who must be able to rely upon the United States to keep its word to tell the truth and to do the right thing." Clinton made the remarks as he accepted the recommendations of an advisory committee he appointed to study the secret experiments, which began in 1944 and continued for three decades. Although the panel studied about 4,000 radiation experiments that took place during that period, it recommended that only a handful of victims receive compensation. Panel members specifically cited three experiments, including one project where 18 hospital patients, most of them terminally ill, were unknowingly injected with plutonium to determine how long the substance would remain in their body. The committee recommended that several subjects of total-body irradiation experiments conducted during World War II, and the subject of a zirconium injection experiment, known only as Cal-Z, also be included. Nevertheless, Administration officials appeared to leave the door open for additional restitution. Energy Secretary Hazel O'Leary said in an interview that there could be "thousands, many thousands" of individuals who deserve payment but stressed that both the government and the panel have been hampered by poor or nonexistent record-keeping during that time. Since her department's investigation began, "of the 10,000 calls we received, about 3,000 individuals gave us enough information to enable us to look in records and, in all the searching of a quarter of a million pages, we found only 50 names," she said. In the case of the 18 subjects of plutonium injections, however, she said discussions regarding compensation would begin immediately with their families. The experiment, conducted from 1945 to 1947, was deemed necessary at the time to assess the risks that workers faced when exposed to such materials. One patient was injected at Oak Ridge Hospital in Oak Ridge, Tenn., 11 at the University of Rochester, three at the University of Chicago and three at a University of California campus. It was unclear which facility was involved. O'Leary said the funds would come out of her department's budget. "We are ready and willing to begin a negotiation. One thing all of us want to avoid is a protracted and expensive lawsuit against the government." Clinton also ordered a review of the procedures for government-sponsored research on humans and said he will create a bioethics advisory panel to police the research process to "see to it that never again do we stray from the basic values of protecting our people and being straight with them." He acknowledged that medical and scientific progress "depends upon learning about people's responses to new medicines, to new cutting-edge treatments, . . . but there is a right way and a wrong way to do it." The work began when many such studies were undertaken in secret to help understand radiation risks to workers involved in the development of the atomic bomb. This was long before it became standard practice to issue "informed consent" to medical research subjects, laying out the risks and benefits of participation. Clinton said some of the experiments performed during that period "were unethical not only by today's standards but by the standards of the time. They failed both the test of our national values and the test of humanity." The experiments "were shrouded not for a compelling reason of national security but for the simple fear of embarrassment, and that was wrong," he added. The experiments ended in 1974, when the government recognized the need to protect human subjects and established regulations that govern human research. ................. He served a special duty tour as the pilot member for the Air Force Chief of Staff's Cyberspace Task Force, which created the strategic path for the standup of the Air Force Cyber Command. He is a distinguished graduate of the USAF Academy and USAF Pilot Training, and in his civilian career Tom has flown the ATR-42, DC-10, MD-80, A-300, B-737, B-757, B-767, B-777 and B-787. He completed a master's degree through the Naval Postgraduate School's Center for Homeland Defense and Security and received the program's Outstanding Thesis Award." No member of the military foreign or domestic has ever become sick with anthrax as an act of biowarfare 2. Anthrax, a bacterial infection, has always been easily treated with antibiotics (amoxicillin, doxycycline, ciprofloxacin) 3. The Anthrax Vaccine Adsorbed (AVA) in 1970 and was recommended for use by a small population of textile mill workers, veterinarians, laboratory scientists, and other workers with occupational risk of exposure to anthrax. In the 1990s, increased concern about the use of biological weapons led the Department of Defense (DoD) to begin vaccination of U.S. military personnel. Some troops were given anthrax vaccine in the 1991 Gulf War, and a large program to vaccinate all service members was begun in 1998. 4. By 2001 a limited vaccine supply and significant resistance by the troops, resulted in delays in federal approval for release of newly manufactured vaccine lots, had significantly slowed plans to vaccinate all military personnel. 5. After the deliberate distribution of anthrax spores in bioterrorist incidents in the autumn of 2001, the vaccine was offered as part of the treatment for as many as 10,000 of the civilians who had been exposed. Letters containing anthrax spores were mailed to several news media offices and to Senators Tom Daschle and Patrick Leahy, killing five people and infecting 17. Rempfer drops a bombshell on who may have been the perpetrator. 6. Sadly, Gulf War Illness (GWI) an ill-defined set chronic symptoms in Veterans deployed to the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Storm/Operation Desert Shield (1990-91) may be result of anthrax vaccination. It afflicted between 175,000 - 210,000 of the 700,000 U.S. troops deployed during the Gulf War. 7. Today our troops receive the Emergent BioSolutions BioThrax 3 injection primary series. This film exposes the climate alarm as an invented scare without any basis in science. It shows that mainstream studies and official data do not support the claim that we are witnessing an increase in extreme weather events -- hurricanes, droughts, heatwaves, wildfires and all the rest. It emphatically counters the claim that current temperatures and levels of atmospheric CO2 are unusually and worryingly high. On the contrary, compared to the last half billion years of earth’s history, both current temperatures and CO2 levels are extremely and unusually low. We are currently in an ice age. It also shows that there is no evidence that changing levels of CO2 (it has changed many times) has ever ‘driven’ climate change in the past. Why then, are we told, again and again, that ‘catastrophic man-made climate-change’ is an irrefutable fact? Why are we told that there is no evidence that contradicts it? Why are we told that anyone who questions ‘climate chaos’ is a ‘flat-earther’ and a ‘science-denier’? The film explores the nature of the consensus behind climate change. It describes the origins of the climate funding bandwagon, and the rise of the trillion-dollar climate industry. It describes the hundreds of thousands of jobs that depend on the climate crisis. It explains the enormous pressure on scientists and others not to question the climate alarm: the withdrawal of funds, rejection by science journals, social ostracism. But the climate alarm is much more than a funding and jobs bandwagon. The film explores the politics of climate. From the beginning, the climate scare was political. The culprit was free-market industrial capitalism. The solution was higher taxes and more regulation. From the start, the climate alarm appealed to, and has been adopted and promoted by, those groups who favour bigger government. This is the unspoken political divide behind the climate alarm. The climate scare appeals especially to all those in the sprawling publicly-funded establishment. This includes the largely publicly-funded Western intelligentsia, for whom climate has become a moral cause. In these circles, to criticise or question the climate alarm has become is a breach of social etiquette. And already, it's garnered millions of views and thousands of reviews. "Watch this documentary to understand the lies, the pseudoscience," Maxime Bernier, the founder and leader of the People's Party of Canada, posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, about the film that details how "an eccentric environmental scare grew into a powerful global industry." "The final nail in the coffin for the 'human-induced climate change' scam. An absolute MUST-WATCH!" Wide Awake Media posted on X while linking to the movie, which features an elite list of scientists, including Nobel Laureate John Clauser, Richard Lindzen, emeritus professor of meteorology at MIT, and Steven Koonin, a theoretical physicist and professor at NYU's Tandon School of Engineering. Still, not all the responses have been positive. "I'm a Dutch science journalist, and I watched [Climate: The Movie]," Maarten Keulemans posted on X. "It's full of crap." Some reviewers went so far as to call for censorship. "I'm thinking we can get 10,000 people to report 'Climate: The Movie' on YouTube as having harmful and misleading content," Eliot Jacobson, a retired mathematics and computer science professor, posted on X on March 23. Following Mr. Jacobson's call, Vimeo removed the video from its platform on March 24, citing a "violation of Vimeo's Terms of Service and/or Guidelines." "The [V]imeo link to 'Climate the Movie' I shared two days ago has been censored!" Nir Shaviv, a physics professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem who appeared in the film, posted on X. "Fully removed beyond the mere shadow blocking [YouTube] has." Neither Mr. Durkin nor Mr. Nelson were surprised. "There's something bigger going on behind the climate thing, beyond the narrow arguments about whether it's true that [carbon dioxide] causes all this stuff -- which, of course, it doesn't," Mr. Durkin told The Epoch Times. "There's almost a blanket ban on skepticism on mainstream television. "It's a kind of Marxism, I suppose. There's an entire class of people who have an interest in high levels of taxation and high levels of regulation, in what might broadly be termed the 'publicly funded establishment' and the 'education establishment.'" Mr. Nelson concurred. "There's a big difference between the climate realists and the other side," he told The Epoch Times. "[Climate alarmists] are constantly reporting us and tattle-telling on people that don't agree with them. "I never see [climate realists] saying, 'let's report people from the other side, and let's take down their videos, let's censor them.' All the censorship is coming from one side, and all the free speech and 'let's debate' is coming from our side. We want to talk about it because we're confident with our evidence." Censorship Unchecked Immediately after Vimeo removed Mr. Durkin's film, he reached out to the platform, "You know, I'm a reasonably well-known, veteran filmmaker, award-winning," he said. "And I told them [via an electronic form], 'Look, all the archive and music is cleared. We see absolutely no reason whatsoever why this was suspended. We've got a lot of good scientists in it." Mr. Nelson posted to X, "Hey @Vimeo: Specifically what is your justification for censoring 'Climate: The Movie'?" "A lot of people said they couldn't believe it was being censored," Mr. Nelson said. "But I never got an official response from anybody." Mr. Durkin didn't get a response, either. "About 12 hours after I reached out, it went back up again. But we don't know why. I presume that some 'greens' complained about it and that they automatically took it down. Fair dues to Vimeo that they put it back up, though, that was good." Vimeo wasn't the only platform to take action against "Climate: The Movie." On March 22, Food Lies, which has 44,000 subscribers, reported that when they first shared the movie on their channel, YouTube "immediately" removed it, and Food Lies had to seek special permission to repost. When the report was granted, YouTube added the following contextual warming, "Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. Human activities have been the main driver of climate change, primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil, and gas," and included a link to the United Nations' "What is Climate Change?" website. Further, Mr. Nelson said he believes Google is censoring the movie's website. "We may have been shadow-banned, but we can't prove it either way," he said. "I don't think Google wants to direct people to our site." However, Mr. Nelson and Mr. Durkin agree that the purchase of Twitter by Elon Musk in 2022 changed the social media censorship game. "I love the fact that X is open right now, and we're able to talk freely on X," Mr. Nelson said. "Because just two years ago, if this had come out when we were all suppressed, it would have made a big difference." "[Social media] is not so much a problem," Mr. Durkin said. "Social media is leaky enough now that it gets out there. "The bigger point is that I pitched this idea to the BBC and Channel Four about a year before I [was on Tom Nelson's podcast]. Why, I have no idea. I knew they'd say no, but I think I wanted to satisfy myself. And, of course, they did say no." Mr. Durkin said that even if a station wanted to air a story expressing skepticism about the "climate crisis," broadcast regulators in Canada, and the UK can destroy that station. "In effect, they're saying, 'If you put out skeptical views, you'll be sanctioned.' And that can go as far as to have your broadcasting license revoked," Mr. Durkin said. "So, you know, this is full-scale state censorship on mainstream media, and [the general public isn't] making a fuss. We're just sort of accepting that this is the case." Paying the Social Cost When asked why "Climate: The Movie" has received such pushback, Mr. Durkin said it boils down to what he terms the "New Class." "Many of these characters have built their careers on the climate scam," he said. "I mean, their reputations, their livelihoods, everything depends on it, and so they feel enormously threatened. "But beyond that, there's this kind of political-ideological movement; it's not just about the weather. And the people who promote it -- most of science is publicly funded, and lots of scientists are involved directly with publicly funded institutes -- are part of that publicly funded establishment, so they have that worldview. "You know, if you look at the political analysis of people in universities, they are 99 percent Democrats, or left-wing even. "And it's now de rigueur in those circles to hate Trump, to believe that more regulation is a civilized thing, to think that public backing for the arts, is a good thing, and so on and so forth. And when you come out and say that you don't think the climate thing is true, you're not just making a narrow point about the medieval warm period, or the geological record, on temperature, you're saying something much bigger, ideologically. "You're saying that maybe Trump's not so bad. And the Second Amendment is a good idea. And you're suddenly lumping yourself in with the deplorables and people in pickup trucks. And if you're in Britain with Brexiteers. You're putting yourself in a whole other social caste, as it were." Mr. Durkin said that before the release of the film "The Great Global Warming Swindle," in 2007, which the head of science at Channel Four asked him to make, he was considered to be one of the "hottest science documentary producers around," and was regularly tasked by Channel Four to produce films. But after that film's release, it took three years before Channel Four asked him back. He said the regular invites to dinner parties and social gatherings in London "media and academic types" dried up. "My wife was extremely cross. There was a huge backlash, and she has really bad memories of the immediate aftermath of putting 'Swindle' out, and that's why she was very, very reluctant to have me make another film," Mr. Durkin said. "So that part of the film, where we talked about the social cost of coming out against climate in terms of ostracism from a particular social class, the New Class, that was personal." The New Class Mr. Durkin, who is publishing a book that takes a deep dive into the "New Class," said one of the characteristics of that group is they consider themselves to be part of the intelligentsia. By that, he means those who have a university degree that has "very little application in the real world." "They hate capitalism because capitalism hates them, and the market hates them," he said. "If you do a degree in sociology, what use are you to man or beast? If I'm running a lawnmower company, I do not need anyone with a degree in sociology. "So, they resent that they're not well received in the marketplace. And historically, they've embraced the state because it provides them with an income and a gratifying grand title if they're working for some big government agency or forum: for the U.N., or an NGO, or for NOAA, or whatever." Mr. Durkin said the class is at odds with the working class and is "enormously powerful" because it's part of the publicly funded establishment. "Until we understand that they are a particular group, they have a particular set of interests, and those interests involve taking away our money and taking away our freedom, then we're in trouble," he said. "I keep telling people, incredibly, in the US and the UK, more than twice as many people work in government as work in manufacturing. Kennedy Jr. who says: Let me just interject some of my own story here, because I spent a lot of my life in Westchester County, New York, and in Millbrook, New York, in Dutchess County . . . So I was in the woods in Dutchess County as a 14-year-old boy in 1969 through 1970, almost every day spending three hours in the woods. I never ran into a deer tick, never saw a deer tick. We saw a lot of wood ticks, but never saw a deer tick. And then I moved to Westchester in 1983 after a hiatus away from the Hudson Valley. And because I train hawks, I was in the woods almost every day and I started getting large infestations, finding these deer ticks, which are much smaller, the size of a pin head, some of them and even smaller during certain parts of the year. And I remember one time standing in the bathtub naked picking deer ticks off myself. I found 29 deer ticks on myself. I would run into nests of them and they would just be all over me. My son, Bobby, got Lyme disease. His face was paralyzed for almost a year. He had Bell's Palsy from the disease. My other kids have almost all gotten Lyme disease, various levels of sickness. I have one child that has a chronic disease now that has given him brain fog, among other things, but really intense brain fog. He is very smart kid, but it's really caused some problems . . . I test positive for Lyme disease. I got the Lyme disease from one of these ticks early on and I got the classic target on my forearm: a red, perfect red circle. And so I knew what it was and I immediately went and took antibiotics. And as you point out in your book, it's pretty easy to treat the disease if you get it very early on. I have never have gotten sick from Lyme disease. I test positive for it. I'm sure I've been reinfected numerous times. I don't even know if one exposure to [Lyme disease] immunizes you against other exposures. I'm lucky that I haven't gotten sick. Almost all of the falconers I grew up with in the Hudson Valley have serious problems now with brain fog and with other symptoms of Lyme disease, including one who has early dementia that I suspect is connected, but there's no way of knowing. But young people who are even younger than me, but all the guys who are my age have problems from it. I remarked to somebody the other day that it's really ruined going into the woods on the East coast. I grew up in the woods and it's now dangerous to go in the woods. You're taking a risk that we never had to take when we were kids, and that's another thing that keeps us from enjoying the outdoors and keeps us locked inside. The idea that this may have been, and is highly likely to have been, a military weapon -- and we cannot say a hundred percent for sure -- but we do know that they were experimenting with ticks there. And that the ticks as you show, are a epidemic because of what happened in Plum Island and the other labs -- deer ticks and other species of ticks, lone star ticks, whatever. We also know they were experimenting with diseases like Lyme disease at that lab and including them in ticks and then infecting people, testing them with bird vectors, et cetera. I've just published a book called Wuhan Coverup, which is a very, very comprehensive history of the weapons program in this country. The bioweapon program was brought over here originally as the first project of the CIA, which was called Operation Paperclip. That was the first project in 1947 of the CIA. After its creation, [the CIA] began smuggling in German bioweapon scientists. Many of them were wanted by the Nuremberg Prosecutors and they were brought over here, a lot of them to Fort Dietrich, but to also to Plum Island and other places to develop -- and they were brought in from Japan, which have much, much more comprehensive bioweapons program. They killed 500,000 people during that World War II period -- 500,000 Chinese with bioweapons. And they were doing these horrendous experiments, live vivid sections of over 3,000 humans. Those scientists were brought over here and put the kind of ethical pall on the US bioweapons. They put their elastic ethics became the brand of the US Bioweapons Program . . . They were very successful. By 1969, they had achieved what they boasted was a nuclear equivalence. In other words, they could kill as many people a nuclear bomb -- and cheaply. They estimated the cost of killing the entire American population; they could achieve that for 29 cents per life with the bioweapons that they had in hand in 1969. And then Richard Nixon surprised everybody and did one of the greatest things in his career, which is he went to Fort Dietrich and he announced the closure, the unilateral termination of US bioweapons programs... ..................... Newby, a talented journalist and science writer, structures her history around a biography of WIlly Burgdorfer, the Swiss-American scientist who discovered borellia burgdorferi, a spirochete bacteria often found in Lyme disease patients. It's an incredible, infuriating, well-written book worth your time. A few lessons: 1. The mid-20th century US biomedical research establishment was psychopathic, whole-heartedly embracing reckless, deadly investigations in the name of developing vaccines and bioweapons. 2. It is possible (& perhaps likely, though not proven) that the emergence and spread of Lyme disease may have been caused by this research program, which included large open-air testing of intentionally infected ticks on US soil. 3. The bioweapons program used combinations of viruses and bacteria infecting the same tick to hide the body's immune response to infection from detection by standard medical tests. 4. Lyme disease and related syndromes are likely caused by more than just borellia burgorferi. Newby makes a circumstantial case for a shadowy rickettsia bacteria that Willy Burgdorfer studied, which he called the "Swiss agent." 5. The financial interests of biomedical researchers and testing companies peddling faulty tests -- alongside their control over the official pronouncements and policy of the National Institute of Health and the US Infectious Disease Society of America -- have frozen in place a diagnostic doctrine that has led to countless Lyme disease patients misdiagnosed and gaslit about the symptoms they are suffering.
