Joseph's dreams are essential for understanding bible prophecy
Two years later the Pharaoh had two dreams, one about cows and one about corn. His dreams troubled him but all the wise men of Egypt could not interpret his dreams for him. Then the butler remembered Joseph, he told the Pharaoh all about how Joseph had interpreted his and the bakers dreams in prison and both interpretations had be completely accurate.
The Pharaoh had Joseph brought in to interpret his dreams, Joseph's interpretation told him that God was showing Pharaoh what he was about to do, there were going to be seven years of plenty followed by seven years of famine. Joseph counseled Pharaoh to appoint a wise man to gather corn and grain into silos during the years of plenty in order to feed Egypt during the seven years of famine.
Pharaoh then appointed Joseph to do just that, he made him second only to Pharaoh in all of Egypt.
Joseph was 30 years old when he became ruler of Egypt. Pharaoh also gave him a wife from the city of On. With that wife Joseph had two sons, the first he called Manasseh which means 'causing to forget' because as he said 'God has caused me to forget my father and all my troubles.'
The second son he called Ephraim which means 'double fruit' because 'God has blessed me and made me fruitful in the land of my affliction'.
In prophetic terms a famine is a famine for the word of God. Jesus is the bread of life he is also the 'word of God made flesh'. I give examples in history of famine and plenty for the word of God.
During the years of plenty Joseph stored up all of the grain and corn. The famine spread into Canaan and Jacob sent his ten sons to Egypt to buy corn, he kept Benjamin behind with himself.
When Jacobs ten sons came to Egypt Joseph recognized them but they did not know him, he remembered his dreams so he asked them who they are, they told him they are sons of one father and their younger brother is at home with the father.
Joseph accused them of spying and put them in prison for 3 days, he then told them they can buy corn but he kept Simeon behind in prison until they brought Benjamin to prove their story was true. He then had their money placed back into their corn sacks which they discovered on the journey home.
When they got home they told Jacob all that had happened. Jacob got mad at them he said 'first Joseph and now Simeon and now you want to take Benjamin you will not take him. Reuben said 'you can slay my two sons if I don't bring him back' but Jacob refused.
After they ran out of corn Jacob said to his sons 'go to Egypt and buy more corn' but Judah said "the man told us not to show our face unless we have our younger brother with us, I will be a surety for him, if I don't bring him back I will bear the blame forever"
Jacob then allowed Benjamin to go and he sent gifts also and double the money in case there was a mistake and he prayed for their journey to be successful.
When they came to Egypt Joseph commanded his servant to make a feast at his house for them to dine with him, they became afraid because they wondered why they were invited to his house. They got to Joseph's house they told the man at the door that they had the money that they found in their sacks but the servant said that God must have given them that money because they weren't missing any money. Simeon was there also.
When Joseph saw Benjamin he went into another room and wept. At dinner they sat according to birthright, eldest to youngest. Joseph commanded his servant to give Benjamin five times as much as the others.
When they were ready to leave Joseph commanded his servant to again put the money in their sacks of corn but to also to put his silver cup in Benjamin's sack. He then sent the servant after them to accuse them of stealing his cup. They said that whoever the cup is found with can die but the servant said that whoever the cup was found with would be taken to prison and the rest can go. He went through all of their sacks and ended up finding it in Benjamin's sack, so he took him.
They went back to Joseph's house to try to get Benjamin back, Judah told Joseph all about how much Benjamin meant to Jacob and that his father would die in grief if Benjamin didn't go home. He also told him that he had put himself up as a surety that Benjamin would come home and Judah offered to take Benjamin's place so that he could go home.
He we see that Judah has intervened twice on Benjamin's behalf. Judah is the son that inherited the blessing, through him all the nations of the earth would be blessed. It was through the tribe of Judah that Jesus Christ was born into the world. The apostle Paul was of the tribe of Benjamin.
When Joseph heard Judah he broke down and cried and told them 'I am your brother, It was God who brought me here to save our lives' Go tell our father that I am Joseph and there are yet five more years of famine, bring the whole family into Egypt.
