A24 Rat Trap Mounted Horizontally - First Kill

I installed the trap according to the instructions, but rats in our area didn't go for the chocolate bait even though some had dripped on the ground. Possums and skunks liked the bait (see other video about a skunk sticking his paw into the trap and setting it off), but rats ignored it.

Like I saw on another A24 video, I put bird seed and bacon grease in a mesh bag and put that in the lure area of the trap. I spread some bird seed around the bottom of the trap. The rat ate the bird seed, but wouldn't stick its head up into the trap.

I finally mounted the trap on a board horizontally. I poured some birdseed into the trap and when I laid it down, some spilled out onto the board. Over the next few nights the rat (I'm pretty sure it is the same one) ate the seed on the board and finally at the entrance to the trap.

Last night he went farther into the trap and it tripped!

Got him!

NOTE: the mesh bag with bird seed and bacon grease is still in the lure area of the trap.

The whole process took 4 months from first install to first kill.

I don't see any problems installing the trap this way. I have a motion triggered video camera on the trap 24/7. No birds have investigated it. Our cat completely ignores it. And we don't have any small children running around in the yard.
