Fly Tying - Articulated Big Bird Bass Bug

Hello fishin friends! In today's video you're going to sit along with me as I invent a new fly. This fly was inspired by one of my Instagram followers - a fellow I was acquainted with in Oregon who used to work with my wife.

I posted up a picture from a Dollar General haul - I found feather dusters that use turkey feathers for just $1 - he said I need to make a fly and call it Big Bird - so I did.

You get to sit in with me as I'm inventing a new fly with those yellow turkey feathers as the featured material.

Materials used in the creation of this fly:

20mm articulation shanks (home brew Flymen Co. Fish Spine style shanks)

2/0 Aberdeen bend worm hook (Bass Pro house branded)

6/0 Danville thread in pale yellow

Dyed yellow turkey feathers from a Dollar General feather duster

2mm white craft foam

After filming this video, I took the fly for its test swim and was pleasantly surprised at how it sits in the water, how well it casts (I am using a 9 weight with a stout leader) and how its action is on the water once the feathers absorb some water.

I was fishing mid day in bright sun, so not a great time for topwater bass action - I got some follows and one strike, but no hook ups yet. I did learn what I want to add / change to the fly in the 2nd iteration, but this fly as seen in the video will fish for sure!
