How to Improvise Blues Riffs for Beginners
With this foundation, you can take the next step into creating your own riffs by applying variations to riffs that you already know. Applying variations will be yet another step closer to learning how to improvise Blues solos and riffs on guitar, because variations are the result of spontaneous and creative thinking - where new riffs are composed in the moment as opposed to playing riffs that are already known beforehand.

Improvising is often referred to as jamming, where blues riffs and solos are created spontaneously, usually with a backing rhythm. Thought jamming and improvising are essentially intended to be without too many boundaries, musicians usually agree on a key to harmonize with beforehand. Before applying variations, a guitarist needs to know how to play various blues riffs in any key.

Variations
Trying out variations over a backing rhythm is highly recommended. Though totally unplanned, some of the most famous guitar solos feature variations, where guitarists have created classic guitar riffs on the spot while improvising or jamming along to a backing rhythm. Many improvised riffs have become signature riffs, where a guitarist creates a riff that resonates enough that the riff is often repeated or referred to during a solo or on other songs as well.
