Each year, more than 1,000 newborn babies take to the skies during the ancient Thookkam ritual in southern #India. The babies are lifted 12 meters off the ground while being held in the arms of men tied to makeshift cranes. Once airborne, they go for a ride around the temple.

Couples trying to conceive children visit this temple to pray for a blessing. If successful, they must enter their newborn babies into the ceremony the following year to repay and thank the gods. This dramatic ritual comes at the end of a 10-day long celebration.
