"Speak To the Sky" was Rick Springfield's first charting release in the USA; in 1972 the song reached the #14 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (Whitburn, 2013). It was not until 1981, almost 10 years later, that Rick returned to the Billboard top 20 with his #1 hit "Jessie's Girl" (Whitburn, 2013). Rick stated that he was 17 when he wrote "Speak to the Sky" (rickspringfield.us, 2021), and it was his mother who inspired him to write a "happy" song because as he stated "I'd been writing all this stuff about suicide and love triads and so I wrote a happy song" (Hot Ones Radio Show, 1984).
