There is a common perception that the teaching of religion, particularly Christianity, is not allowed in public schools. The most common reason for this is separation of church and state. But many states not only allow it, they require it as part of their curriculum.

For example, in the state of California, sixth grade students are expected to: “Note the origins of Christianity in the Jewish Messianic prophecies, the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth as described in the New Testament, and the contribution of St. Paul the Apostle to the definition and spread of Christian beliefs (e.g., belief in the Trinity, resurrection, salvation).”

As a former public school teacher, Eric Buehrer can relate to both sides of the religion-in-schools debate. He writes and lectures extensively on the subject of religion and public education.
