Spider-Man Playthrough (GameCube) - Tutorial
WatchmeplayNintendo
This is part 1 of my capture of me playing through Spider-Man for the GameCube. This is the movie tie-in game that was released alongside the Spider-Man film in 2002. I'm playing on normal difficulty.
When I was in junior high school I used to watch the Spider-Man cartoon that aired on Fox around the mid '90s. Although I had never read any comic books, I really liked some of the superhero cartoons that aired during this time including Spider-Man and Batman (I wasn't a huge fan of the Superman cartoon, but it was alright). Spider-Man was my absolute favorite among all of these cartoons. I watched every single episode as a kid and even recorded most of them on VHS. However, I always wondered why there had never been a major Spider-Man film released up to that point (aside from that one made-for-TV movie from the '70s).
In the early 2000s, Sony then announced that Sam Raimi would be directing the first major Spider-Man film. Based on my love for the '90s cartoon series, I knew I had to watch the new film the day it came out.
As I recall, I went to see the Spider-Man in the afternoon on my last day of high school, which, to me, was an awesome send-off. The movie ended up being really good, so when the two sequels came out later, I went to see both of them.
Not too long after the first film had released, I was shopping in Best Buy when I noticed a new Spider-Man game based on the movie. Even though I didn't know anything about the new game, I decided to buy the GameCube version on the spot. This was highly unusual for me since I don't normally buy games without doing some sort of research first.
Luckily, the game ended up being really fun, and I stayed up late that night completing as many missions as possible. In fact, the game was so fun that I kept replaying it on harder difficulty levels. There were tons of memorable missions such as infiltrating and escaping from OsCorp, fighting the giant robot boss, and shutting down the bombs on top of the skyscrapers. In fact, this game's missions were actually better than the ones featured in Spider-Man 2, even though Spider-Man 2 was probably a better game overall. However, the camera was always a bit wonky in this game. But that's basically my only gripe.
In this first part I played through the tutorial, which was narrated by Bruce Campbell, the star of the Evil Dead movies and a close friend of Sam Raimi. Bruce's dialogue for the tutorial is really funny, so that's why I'm including it.
Recorded with the Hauppauge HD PVR and the GameCube's component cables. This game doesn't feature progressive scan mode (thanks a lot Activision) so I deinterlaced the footage in Virtualdub.

Spider-Man 2 Playthrough (GameCube) - Part 1
WatchmeplayNintendo
This is part 1 of my capture of me playing through Spider-Man 2 for the GameCube. This is the movie tie-in game that was released alongside the Spider-Man film sequel in 2004.
I purchased the original Spider-Man game for my GameCube on a whim back in 2002 (since I liked the movie) and I was ultimately impressed by the game's quality. So when I heard that another game was coming out in 2004 to coincide with the second Spider-Man film, I kept my eyes out for reviews and whatnot.
I read a bunch of good reviews about the second game's open-world design, but I was a little busy with college, so I didn't pick up Spider-Man 2 for my GameCube until a year after its release.
When I got the game, I found that it was even better than the first one. Treyarch basically took the open-world design of Grand Theft Auto III and molded it to fit the Spider-Man universe. So instead of simply progressing from one linear mission to the next with no overworld, you now had the ability to explore all of New York freely and complete missions as you liked.
In addition, web swinging was changed to a more realistic style so that you couldn't shoot a webline unless some tall structure was nearby. I actually found this change to be for the better since it made web swinging far more interesting and fun. In fact, it was so good that swinging aimlessly around the city became addicting in and of itself.
This is an excellent game that I highly recommend to anyone who owns a GameCube, PlayStation 2 or original Xbox. My only complaint is that the mandatory missions aren't quite as interesting as they were in the prior game (for instance, sneaking through OsCorp). But overall, the game is better than the first one, and it has a ton of replay value.
In this first part I started a new save file and completed Chapters 1 and 2.

Ikaruga Two-Player Playthrough (GameCube - Progressive Scan Mode)
WatchmeplayNintendo
This is a capture of me and a friend playing through Ikaruga for the GameCube. We're playing the game in progressive scan mode using an actual GameCube (not the Wii). I'm player one and Drew is player two. We're playing on normal difficulty.
I picked up Ikaruga in 2003 shortly after hearing about it from a friend. I've always been a big fan of vertical-scrolling 2D shooters, so I didn't hesitate to buy this one. When I eventually played the game, I was instantly blown away by the insane polarity-switching mechanic, the crazy bosses and the sheer amount of bullets on screen. The game forced me to think and react in new ways, such as learning to filter out or ignore certain colors while dodging incoming shots. I believe this game was my first introduction to the bullet-hell genre.
I don't know if this is true with the other console versions of Ikaruga, but with the GameCube version, you can eventually unlock unlimited continues, which you’ll see here. This is quite helpful since Drew and I can't beat the game with a limited number of lives. Ikaruga is probably one of the hardest games I've ever played.
There are some really amazing Ikaruga videos out there, but this is just some footage of two normal gamers playing through the game the best they can. We hadn’t played this game in years, and this was our first and only recording attempt, so we didn’t do too impressive, but I mostly just wanted to show how the game runs on the GameCube. Enjoy.

XIII Playthrough (GameCube) - Brighton Beach
WatchmeplayNintendo
[Note: This video and description were originally posted on Youtube on August 13, 2019.]
This is part 1 of my capture of me playing through XIII for the GameCube. This is being played on my GameCube (not the Wii). I'm playing on normal difficulty.
A few months ago it was announced that a remastered version of XIII would be releasing in November for current consoles (although it was recently pushed back to 2020), so I decided it was a good time to finally post a playthrough of the GameCube version.
I was a huge fan of first-person shooters on the Nintendo 64, although I primarily played GoldenEye and Perfect Dark. The FPS controls on the N64 weren't perfect, but they worked for me since they mostly involved aiming left and right with auto aim taking care of the rest.
However, by the time the GameCube arrived, FPS controls had switched to the atrocious new dual analog setup, which I detested. Also, Rare was quickly sold to Microsoft, removing the possibility of that company releasing any amazing shooters for Nintendo's new console.
As a result, I mostly abandoned the FPS genre until The Conduit was released in 2009. However, thanks to a TV show called X-Play, I knew about a Ubisoft shooter entitled XIII, which used a cel-shaded, comic book style that I thought looked neat. In early 2006, while I was on break before my last semester of college, I decided to pick up a used copy of XIII for the GameCube to keep me busy. Since I only paid about $17, I didn't really care if the game fell short of something like Perfect Dark.
Although the controls were terrible and the recoil made me want to pull my hair out, I quickly found that XIII was an enjoyable shooter. The single-player missions were fun, and the multiplayer mode was pretty good too. It even allowed for four-player splitscreen and featured bots as well.
I ended up playing the multiplayer mode quite a bit with friends, and I occasionally played against the bots by myself, but I only beat the single-player mode once. So this is only my second time beating the game. If my aim sucks during this playthrough, it's because I'm terrible with dual analog controls.
In this first part I completed Mission 1: Brighton Beach.

XIII Multiplayer (GameCube) - Deathmatch on Winslow Bank

[Note: This video and description were originally posted on Youtube on August 13, 2019.]
This is a capture of me playing the multiplayer mode in XIII for the GameCube. This is being played on my GameCube (not the Wii).
I recorded some new multiplayer footage from this game to go along with my recent playthrough. XIII is being remastered next year, so it will be interesting to see what happens with the multiplayer mode.
I purchased XIII around early 2006 when I was on break before my last semester of college. I was just looking for something to keep me entertained for a few weeks, and this game did the job fairly well.
Although the PC version of XIII had online multiplayer, the GameCube version did not. However, the game did feature bots, similar to Perfect Dark, so I was able to play multiplayer matches by myself. The game also featured four-player splitscreen, which I was able to try a few times back in the GameCube era.
The multiplayer mode is rather simplistic, but it's still fun overall. I generally prefer the capture the flag mode, but deathmatch and team deathmatch are also fun. However, my one complaint is that the controls suck terribly. I hate dual analog for shooters and despise recoil, but unfortunately, this game has both.
In this video I played a deathmatch on Winslow Bank with five AI opponents.
Recorded with the Hauppauge HD PVR and the GameCube's component cables. This game doesn't feature progressive scan mode (thanks a lot Ubisoft) so I deinterlaced the footage in Virtualdub.

Smash TV Two-Player Playthrough (Midway Arcade Treasures - GameCube)
WatchmeplayNintendo
This is a capture of me and a friend playing through the arcade version of Smash TV via Midway Arcade Treasures for the GameCube. I'm player one and Drew is player two.
Back in 2004 I picked up Midway Arcade Treasures for my GameCube because I was bored and looking for something to keep me busy for a month or so before I transferred to a university.
I was a fan of Rampage, Marble Madness and Paperboy as a kid (mostly due to their NES ports), so I decided to pick up this compilation disc to play those games again via their original arcade versions.
Although I was previously unfamiliar with Smash TV (I hadn't seen it in the arcades before or played any of the console ports), I gave it a try shortly after getting Midway Arcade Treasures, and I was quickly impressed. I played through it several times with friends and really enjoyed all the action and power-ups. The references to the Running Man and Robocop were also funny. I've also heard that this game has the highest kills per minute of any video game. That's quite an accomplishment.
I don't recall if this game starts out with unlimited continues when you first play it, but it seemed like Drew and I had unlimited continues for this playthrough. We definitely needed it, as you'll see here.
We could have played the game a little better (we hadn't played it in years), but the GameCube controller doesn't work that great with this game. The right analog stick doesn't feel right and my thumb always slips off it as well. A dual joystick, like the arcade machine, would be much better.
In any event, we completed the entire game. I hope you enjoy the footage.
Recorded with the Hauppauge HD PVR and the GameCube's component cables.
