BOA sifts through database for the US Government.
Many people are mad at Bank of America right now. BOA broke people’s trust. I’ll expand. Tom Carlson from FOX reported that Bank of America searched through customer data and provided the data to the feds after the Capitol riot. The US government had contacted BOA(but now I wonder if it’s addressed to all banks?) and asked them to search the BOA’s database. The government asked to scan for those things and then flag them for investigation. The “criteria” was this: Search for anyone that were in DC between Jan 5 and 6th based on their CC purchases. That sure includes many people, right? But then they asked to search for anyone that rented a hotel or AirBnB in DC, Virgina or Maryland after Jan. 6th. This narrows the results. Next, they searched for anyone that purchased a weapon between Jan 7th up to Jan 20th. Search for anyone that purchased airline tickets after Jan 6th. Now guess what? The BOA did this without telling their customers! Those are private information. BOA did not even say NO, this is private. There was an occasion, last January 2020, where the government asked APPLE to give FBI info to help unlock apple phones and APPLE refused. They cited customer’s privacy. BOA could have said no. As a result, one person was red flagged and questioned by the Feds because his purchase history matched the results. How is this even legal? Many people are talking about leaving BOA because of this. They are encouraging you to go find your local credit unions instead. When BOA was asked about this, they said “We don’t comment on our communications with law enforcement. All banks have responsibilities under federal law to cooperate with law enforcement inquires in full compliance with the law.” Really? Sounds like a cop out to me. Will BOA’s decision impact the banking industry? Time will tell…
