Washington state: Yakima, Picking Cherries at Barrett Orchards 2018

Picking Cherries in Yakima Washington is one our family activities for the summer. Cherries, Strawberries, Raspberries, Grapes, Apples and any other fruit we can get. We usually pick between 10 and 25 pounds of each, my wife then takes it home and freezes it so we can have fresh smoothies and homemade syrup in the fall and winter. We need a second freezer, but buying the fruit in season and freezing it is so much cheaper than buying stale off season fruit in the winter when you are really craving it.

My wife is from Vietnam, She and my daughter came here in 2015, so fresh fruit off the tree is still very special to her. The first time she saw cherries growing on a tree she almost cried in amazement that so much fruit could fit onto one tree. Me being the typical American man, pulled the truck right next to a tree so she could pick fresh cherries from the comfort of the passenger’s seat. What a joy seeing the world through fresh eyes.

Why did we see so many Asian people picking fruit? Mostly because it’s a new and wonderful experience for them to pick the fruit directly from the tree. An experience every family should share with their children before they grow too old.

We went to Barrett Orchards in Yakima for these cherries. The orchards are great! The trees are young and small, bursting with cherries of all types. They also have grapes, apples, and a large variety of other fruit to be picked in season. It’s a funny thing to see in the orchards, there is such an abundance of fruit that you can pick 10 pounds easily from one tree, but there are so many trees there, everyone picks a handful or two from one tree, and wanders over to another tree just to pick a few more and move on.

We picked Bing cherries and Rainier cherries, about 10 pounds each. The Bing cherries are rich and dark red. They look and taste wonderful. The Rainier cherries are mostly yellow, with a bit of red when they are ripe. They are sweeter and have a stronger cherry flavor, I prefer the Rainiers, my wife and daughter prefer the Bings.
