It's true there are some people profiting from the misfortune of others in the stock market. An excellent example of this is hedge fund "short selling."

That said, there are many people counting on returns from the stock market to build up their retirements. Are they benefitting from the actions of hedge funds (potentially without even knowing that's the case)?

I'm certainly not smart enough to answer that.

That said, when folks attack short traders, you can bet it has an effect on such people in some way(s).

Like it or not, stock shorters don't exist in a vacuum.
