One story, but three different accounts in the gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. Many commentators draw together the information from all three accounts. This is fine if you want the fullest possible understanding of the historical event. But if you want to understand what God is trying to teach us through this story, you need to look at each account individually. Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, each gospel writer uses the same story to teach different biblical truths and principles. The information that each author chooses to include (or not include) is based on what God is wanting to communicate through that particular book.
