During the American Civil War, many expected the cotton mill workers of Manchester, England, to side with the Confederacy so the cotton trade could resume. Instead, they formed a Union and Emancipation Society on December 31, 1862, and sent an address to Abraham Lincoln praising the Emancipation Proclamation that he would sign the next day.
