Illinois Regiments at Gettysburg
A tribute to the three regiments – the 8th Illinois Cavalry, 12th Illinois Cavalry, and 82nd Illinois Infantry – that represented the Prairie State in the Battle of Gettysburg on July 1st-3rd, 1863

Each soldier's rank, marital status, and other information is meant to describe his life as of July 1, 1863, when the Battle of Gettysburg began. However, the pictures could come from any point in the soldier's life. I researched these men’s lives to the best of my ability, but I frequently found that various sources provided conflicting information about name spelling, years of life, place of birth, etc. There are many soldiers I left out because I could not confirm that they were present for the Battle of Gettysburg or because I could not find an adequate picture of them.

Abraham Lincoln on Mob Violence
Will America choose the rule of law or the rule of the mob? Although Lincoln addressed this question in 1838, Americans have wrestled with the choice ever since.

Address from the Manchester Union & Emancipation Society to Abraham Lincoln
The anti-slavery citizens of Manchester, England, chose to support the Union rather than the Confederacy during the American Civil War, even though the loss of Southern cotton had devastated Manchester's textile industry and cost many their livelihoods. The day before Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, they formed the Union and Emancipation Society and approved this address to send to Lincoln.

Lincoln's Reply to Manchester, England
During the American Civil War, many expected the cotton mill workers of Manchester, England, to side with the Confederacy so the cotton trade could resume. Instead, they formed a Union and Emancipation Society on December 31, 1862, and sent an address to Abraham Lincoln praising the Emancipation Proclamation that he would sign the next day. A few weeks later, he responded to their message.

Abraham Lincoln and Manchester, England
During the American Civil War, the British people debated whether to support the Union or the Confederacy. For most of the cotton-mill workers in Manchester, England, the war had cost them their livelihoods. However, they had long disliked working with cotton picked by slaves. Would the hope of restoring the cotton trade cause them to side with the South, or would the hope of abolishing slavery cause them to side with the North?
