Morning on the Oligocene Savanna, Op 145

A pastoral scene in North America - A spring morning 35 million years ago…Birds fly
about and sing their songs, and various animals make their announcements of the
morning. Suddenly a herd of Mesohippus, primitive horses the size of a large dog, gallops
past… A primitive cat, Hopolophenus, like all cats, is trying to decide if he is hungry
enough to cull out the weakest of the herd, but before he can decide they disappear
in a cloud of dust, and he tries to go back to sleep. But, the thundering stomp of a
Brontops who appears foraging for tree branches passes. That is too big for the small cat,
and he quietly lets it pass. Soon the calm returns, the cat goes to sleep…
The sun is high in the sky.
