Utah Voter List Testimony - Media Argument (2014 HB302)

A lobbyist for the Utah Media Coalition tells a Utah State House committee that the private identifying information of every Utah voter has to be available regardless of their personal circumstances and calls HB302S1 an overreaction to threats that are more hypothetical than real. Currently, the Utah Lieutenant Governor's office sells the full voter list to anyone willing to pay. The list was recently posted to the internet and contains voters' personal information, including voting history. This list includes prominent community leaders, police officers and judges (and their families). The Governor and Lieutenant Governor are the exception as their information is typically not included.

HB302 would allow voters to opt-out of such a release. Similar bills have been opposed by media groups, both major political parties, Lexis-Nexis and others who believe they are entitled to voter's personal information even if it intrudes an individual's right to vote to maintain privacy.
