Red Mountain Winter Time Lapse

As the snow falls in the mountains of the Colorado Rockies some of the high mountain roads close to vehicle traffic and open to winter activities. In Breckenridge Colorado, one of the best roads transitioned to snow sports is the Boreas Pass road.

The Boreas Pass road has a rich history of the area going back to the 1800's where mining was the lay of the land and prospectors hiked from Como and the railways in South Park to find their fortunes in the surrounding mountains. By the 1870's the Boreas Pass road was converted to the highest narrow gauge railroad which operated until 1938. Boreas Pass stands as an outdoor history museum today with access to Bakers Tank and the ghost towns of Dyersville and Boreas where the Section House still flourishes as a back country hut you can rent from the 10th mountain division hut system.

As the tree-line breaks, the views come into their own and your efforts are rewarded by mountain views and glades below 30 degrees down to Indiana Creek. Keep in mind that you are in the back country in winter and must take the proper precautions and preparations for avalanches.

Snow Shoeing, Cross Country Skiing, and Back Country skiing with randonnee systems are required to make it out this far. I have yet to find conditions favorable to take my fat bike up to Boreas Pass due to the limited traffic and lack of solid packed trail.
