Winter Fat Biking New Trails at Gold Run Nordic Center
Gold Run Nordic Center is one of the best places to ride Winter Fat Bike Trails in Breckenridge Colorado. With Four trails near the club house and more trails above the Nordic Center off of Gold Run Road you are sure to run out of legs before you run out of trails. The Town of Breckenridge grooms seven additional trails off Gold Run Road. Dry Gulch is my favorite, but my GoPro locked up on that video. Then there is Upper Flume to Middle Flume to Tom's Baby. The new additions are Fall Classic to Hard Luck and Slalom to Upper Flume, Middle Flume, and Tom's Baby.
The best route to make the most of these trails together is to follow the Course for the Gold Run Fat Bike Race Number 4 found on Strava. You can Start at the Nordic Center or the Gold Run Road Parking lot. From there, climb Gold Run road to the Historic Preston Town Site and turn left just across the way from the Jumbo Overlook sign. While you are here you may as well go to the Jumbo Overlook as well! Following the Trail left goes to Dry Gulch, an old historic mining community that is used for weddings and other gatherings in the summer. Once beyond the Dry Gulch buildings and on up the hill, prepare yourself for an awesome descent to Gold Run Road after taking in the views. Turn left on Gold Run Road and Climb to the top of Gold Run Road to check out the views of the ten mile range and Breckenridge Ski Resort. Descend back where you came, about 100 feet, and take the Fall Classic trail to your right. Or, your left as you are climbing up the road. The Trail sign lets you know you are in the right place. Ride Fall Classic to Hard luck and back down to the Preston Town Site. Climb the road again and turn right onto Slalom directly across from the Fall Classic Trail. If the conditions are cold enough and the snow firm enough you can really fly. The snow and your tires will tell you how fast you can go without sliding out. During this video the snow was warm which kept the speeds down. If you get pulled down toward the bank of the trail along the fall line on the off cambers, you are going too fast for conditions.
The Slalom trail will take you to a clearing and a few open switchbacks where you will turn onto the Upper flume trail. Upper Flume will take you back in the trees where you will ride until you reach the intersection for the middle flume. Make your first hard left to get into the wider flow trail of middle flume. This year the snow shoe tracks have cleared out the summer trail as well. The Winter Middle Flume Trail is much more fun. Turn right and the intersection to Tom's Baby at the bottom and take it back to the parking lot. PeaBody Placer, otherwise known as Gold Run Road, will take you back to Midas Touch and the Club House if you started from there.

Colorado Trail descent from Muggins Gulch
Segment 6 of the Colorado Trail spans 32.9 miles from Kenosha Pass on HWY 285 to HWY 9 in Breckenridge. This segment of the Colorado trail is the longest climbing nearly 5200 feet and descending over 6000 feet of elevation from point to point. The Muggins Gulch intersection has access the finest views on the trail near the Red Trail junction without climbing up to Georgia Pass.
The Muggins Gulch trailhead is found just over 4 miles up Tiger road from HWY 9 at the gate on Muggings Gulch road. It is also a mile up the road from the Horseshoe Dredge Trailhead. Although Muggins Gulch may not be the best place to park your vehicle for this adventure, it is very easy to find. The best places to park are either the Horseshoe Dredge Parking lot or the parking lot at the end of the trail on Revette Drive.
This trail is epic and is often used with the many other trails that connect to it as a part of loops originating from Breckenridge, Keystone and Dillon. Any way you ride this trail you have a lot of fun! Yield to hikers, runners and through hikers when you see them and enjoy this awesome trail finished in 1987.

Hiking The Gore Trail - Copper to Silverthorne Colorado
If you like the pictures in this video and would like to support this and further projects please head over to my Picfair store and take a deeper look at the beauty of this trail: https://www.picfair.com/users/Credibl...
I have been planning this speed hike for a few months now and it was well worth the effort and planning. Could I hike from Copper to Silverthorne Colorado in a day using the Gore trail in the Eagles Nest Wilderness and not have to bail out to Frisco early? Both Uneva and Eccles Passes are just shy of 12,000 feet! The trail is 20.4 miles point to point. It took me 8 and 1/2 hours total time including stops, with 4500 feet of climbing and 5400 feet of descending. It was a big day and I had an awesome time! My Strava time was 7 hours and 8 minutes and I averaged 3mph! There is something about hiking above tree-line that sets you into the moment like nothing else.
The Eagles Nest Wilderness area is strictly a hiking area and bikes are NOT allowed. I find that hiking is great for cross training and a great way to break up the riding schedule with other sometimes strenuous activities complimenting the sport.

Wreck on the Hymasa
The Hymasa Trail is a two way single track alternative to the Amasa Back jeep trail, otherwise known as cliffhanger. It Ascends to the Amasa Back saddle and the downhill entrance to Captain Ahab. This trial is preferred for uphill traffic as the Amasa Back trail is busy with Jeeps and steep technical obstacles.
The Hymasa trail will take you through a desert adventure following blue lines across the slickrock when the dirt trail disappears. Home to 4 other trails and one jeep road you should take the rest of the way to the overlook, this area will challenge your technical riding and offer world class views.
Constructed in 2014, this 2.7 mile trail climbs 600 feet and did the job it was designed for and then some. The areas of impact along side the Jeep road are no longer tread upon and mountain bikers have a really fun trail to climb and descend when the time comes.

Boreas Pass Road Winter Timelapse
The Boreas Pass Road is the gateway to winter back country access on the south side of Breckenridge Colorado. This road usually closes on the first Monday of November to vehicle traffic and sees a lot of recreational traffic during the winter months.
The Boreas Pass road started as a trail for miners in the 1860's in their relentless pursuit of gold in the valley of the Blue around Breckenridge. By 1866 it was widened for wagons and stage coaches. In 1882 the Denver, South Park, and Pacific Railroad started laying narrow gauge railroad tracks from Como to the town of Breckenridge and later was extended to Leadville. The ghost towns of Boreas and Dyersville can be found on the pass or near the pass 6 miles up the road.
Snow Showing, Hiking, Cross Country Skiing and Back Country skiing are the main activities accessible from a smaller parking lot just north of the gate. Fat Biking can also be done on the road up to Bakers Tank and on the Bakers Tank trail when conditions are right. The road passed bakers tank is not groomed by sled and sees only a modest amount of foot traffic.
The views of the Breckenridge Ski Resort and the 10 Mile range reward everyone who participates in activities on this road.

Winter Fat Biking down Gold Run road to Preston Town site
Winter Fat Biking in Breckenridge is a great addition to the skiing activities in Breckenridge. The Gold Run Nordic Center offers fat biking from their lodge off Tiger road which includes rentals and rentals can be found in town as well.
The Town of Breckenridge has been grooming trail by snowmobile for the past few years and lays track down on Gold Run Road, Dry Gulch road, Upper Fume and Tom's Baby in the Gold Run Nordic Center area. French Gulch includes the B & B, Turks, and the Sally Barber trails. Boreas Pass road is also accessible to Bakers Tank and the Baker tank trail.
The top of the Turks trail before reaching Sallie Barber get windblown and impassible quickly so is hit or miss. Which ever area you plan to explore keep an eye out for moose and give them plenty of room on the trail. It is best to turn around and leave if possible.

Eagles Nest Wilderness - Hiking loop over Buffalo Mountain from Frisco Colorado
Access to the South Eastern trails of the Eaglesnest Wilderness can be found in Silverthorne and Frisco Colorado. Just off the east bound roundabout of HWY 9 and I70 in Frisco. Follow the dirt road right before the east bound on ramp to the end where the Lilly Pad Lake Trail starts.
With 13.72 miles with 4400 feet of elevation, this loop is full of world class views above tree line and reaches an elevation around 12700 feet. The gore range, it's jagged peaks, lush flowery meadows and lakes make this area one of the best in the area to explore.
For this route you will start at the LillyPad Lakes Trailhead hike to Lilly Pad Lakes and then on to the Buffalo Cabin Trail, Up to the Buffalo Mountain Trail and then climb around 2,000 feet to the top of Buffalo mountain. Once at the top of Buffalo Mountain you will need to carefully work your way to the south west side along the ridge, stay on the Southeast side which is easier. When you reach the South East side of Buffalo Mountain you will want to look to the north east. This is a good place to descend down to the ridge line heading over to Eccles Pass and the Gore Trail. Follow the Ridge line the whole way to Eccles Pass and the gore trail. Take the Gore trail left and to the south to the Meadow Creek Trail and take the Meadow Creek Trail back to the parking lot and the car.

Red Mountain Winter Time Lapse
As the snow falls in the mountains of the Colorado Rockies some of the high mountain roads close to vehicle traffic and open to winter activities. In Breckenridge Colorado, one of the best roads transitioned to snow sports is the Boreas Pass road.
The Boreas Pass road has a rich history of the area going back to the 1800's where mining was the lay of the land and prospectors hiked from Como and the railways in South Park to find their fortunes in the surrounding mountains. By the 1870's the Boreas Pass road was converted to the highest narrow gauge railroad which operated until 1938. Boreas Pass stands as an outdoor history museum today with access to Bakers Tank and the ghost towns of Dyersville and Boreas where the Section House still flourishes as a back country hut you can rent from the 10th mountain division hut system.
As the tree-line breaks, the views come into their own and your efforts are rewarded by mountain views and glades below 30 degrees down to Indiana Creek. Keep in mind that you are in the back country in winter and must take the proper precautions and preparations for avalanches.
Snow Shoeing, Cross Country Skiing, and Back Country skiing with randonnee systems are required to make it out this far. I have yet to find conditions favorable to take my fat bike up to Boreas Pass due to the limited traffic and lack of solid packed trail.

Bottom of Amasa Back from Captain Ahab in Moab Utah
This is the bottom of the Amasa Back Jeep road from the Captain Ahab trail junction. The Amasa Back area is the closest mountain biking area from town and offers access to five MTB Trails.
Amasa Back Jeep road, also known as cliffhanger, used to be an access road used by Amasa Larson to get to his cows. It has since morphed into one of the greatest areas in Moab to ride. Amasa Back on it's own is a black diamond trail 3.8 miles long and climbs around 1400 feet to the top of the mesa overlooking the Colorado river. With an Average gradient of 10 percent, expect to climb for a few hours to the overlook.
The Amasa Back area is home to 6 Trails: Amasa Back, Captain Ahab, HyMasa, Jackson, Pothole Arch, and Rockstacker. All trails except for HyMasa and Pothole Arch are either black diamond or double black diamond trails.

Bottom of Captain Ahab in Moab Utah
If you are looking to challenge yourself and amp up your technical riding skills look no further than Moab Utah. Located in south eastern Utah this place is a mecca for motor heads and mountain bikers alike. If you are visiting in the summer months be prepared to leave to the trail early and park your car during the day. Walking in this small town is much easier than driving your vehicle and looking for parking in town amongst the constant stream of traffic.
The Captain Ahab trail is an expert level single track trail 4.3 miles long with around 1000 feet of climbing from point to point. It's vision came from a coffee stop between two friends, Tyson Swasey and Nick Badovinac, on a cold winter day in 2012. On January 20, 2013 Tyson and his team, with the approval of BLM, put in over 280 volunteer hours in two months to build the trail. It now stands as a testament to local riders and how they can impact their community and the world of Mountain Biking.
This is not a downhill trail and you will find that it takes a lot of work to get down to the bottom where it connects back to the Amasaback jeep road. When you arrive on the finishing shelf and the sign that concludes the trail, you will have a sense of accomplishment that will stick with you for years. Even if you have to walk features or your bars are too wide to fit through some of the gaps in the rocks.

Chest Cam Skiing in Breckenridge Ski Resort - Claimjumper
With 5 Peaks, 187 trails, and 2,908 skiable acres, Breckenridge ski resort offers enough diversity for the entire family. Roughly 105 miles from the Denver airport, this resort can be reached by shuttle and has a capacity of nearly 43,000 people per hour.
Best skied in the early hours between 1st chair and noon to avoid crowds, you can cover a lot of ground. Claimjumper is a blue run that connects Peak 7 to Peak 8 before reaching the T-bar and is wide enough to avoid the crowds when the lines get long.
Breckenridge ski resort began it's planning phase towards the end of the 1950's when Bill Rounds of the Porter and Rounds lumber company had an idea to bring skiing into the Valley. He created an organization called the Summit County Development Corporation which started to work with the the U. S. Forest Service and by December of 1861 the Peak 8 ski area opened. Early skiing consisted of a single Heron double chair with a midway unloading station and a short T Bar. Tickets were four dollars for adults and two dollars and fifty cents for children. Ullr fest came just a year later as the majority of the ski instructors were Norwegian.

Ups and Downs of the Slickrock trail in Moab Utah
The Slick Rock Trail in Moab Utah is arguably one of the most famous mountain bike trails in the world. The tacky sandstone delivers traction out of this world with the right tires. In the early 2000's, I used to ride this trail 3 to 4 times a year while visiting the area on mountain biking adventures outside of Arizona. 20 years later, this trail brought back memories as I chased the sunset around it's 11 mile length.
Completed as a motorcycle trail on June 5th, 1969, it's fame became immediately apparent when a visitor flew in to ride the trail but could not find a motorcycle to rent. Around 1978 group of local skate boarders were featured in The Wide World of Skateboarding after skating the area. When Rim Cyclery opened in 1983, after Moab's uranium processing plant closed, Moab started making itself known as the mountain bike capital of the world. In 1983 Rim Cyclery started as Ross dealers and soon after brought in something new called a "stumpjumper".
There are countless places in the world that could easily claim that title but remember, Slick Rock in Moab Utah is a gem of the cycling community with wild roots sure to fire up your spirit and open your eyes to miles of adventure

Winter Fat Biking in Breckenridge CO Upper Flume to Gold Run
There is a lot to do nearly year round in Breckenridge Colorado. When the lift lines are too crowded or you are tired of skiing, like that could ever happen, get on a fat bike and step into a whole new world on two wheels.
The Gold Run Nordic Center off of Tiger Road has access to some of the best fat bike trails around. Just watch out for the moose! Upper Flume to Tom's Baby is a favorite of mine. Further up Peabody Placer, or Gold Run Road is the trail out to Dry Gulch and a quick climb but an even better descent back down to the road.
There are also fat bike trails in French Gulch and on the Boreas Pass Road. More Video to come. I created this video in January of 2019.
