Have you ever had a pooch escape from your car or arms or your home?
What is the first thing you do? If you are like most people, you chase after them. They run and then you run. It seems almost instinctual, does not it? I have come to believe that it really is an instinct that takes over when we chase after our loose dog(s). It is not just something we do when our own pets get loose, but something we do when a friend’s dog gets out of the house or when we see a loose dog running down the highway or the street or in the parks.

The problem with our first ability (to chase) is that it hardly gets us closer to catches them.
In fact, the more we run the more they run, and in most cases, they run even harder and faster. It must be pretty scary seeing a bunch of people chasing you. (Heck! It is scary being a human and having a bunch of people chasing you! I would run too!) I do not imagine a dog is likely to stop and ask itself “Does that person mean me harm?” No. They are probably thinking “I am in danger. I need to run!”

The truth is it can be pretty strong to go against the instinct to chase a loose pooch, but we really must learn to so, because when we chase we chance to put ourselves and the loose dog in danger.

Instead, if you are playing with your dog, have your dog chase you. If your dog gets in front of you, turn and run the other direction. This is a fun way to exercise you and your dog, but be sure that your dog chases you; you do not chase your dog.
