Today I'm showing you exactly what tools I bring when foraging wild plants, mushrooms, herbs … and why each one matters. Whether you’re heading out for a casual walk or hunting for edible treasures, having the right gear makes all the difference.

A folding knife, perfect for fine cutting and safe carry.
A hori-hori (digging/trenching knife), ideal for roots, tubers and tricky spots.
Pruning shears, for clipping stems cleanly and without damage.
A mesh collection bag, so your harvest breathes, doesn’t get crushed, and you stay mobile.
A florist-style tool belt (or garden belt) so everything stays accessible, hands free.
Gardening/foraging gloves — protecting your hands from thorns, rough bark, bug bites, etc.

In the video I’ll show each tool, talk about what I look for when buying, how I carry and use it properly, and share some field-tips for foraging safely and efficiently. Whether you’re new to foraging or refin­ing your kit, this gear helps you stay organised, safe and effective.

How to Use These Tools:

Make sure your knife is sharp and in a sheath or holster; safety first. Refer to guidelines for choosing a good blade (tang strength, grip, sheath) for outdoor use.

The hori-hori is great when you encounter roots or want to dig for edible tubers — but always check local regulations for digging wild plants.

Use pruning shears instead of your knife when possible: cleaner cuts, less damage to the plant, easier on your hands.

Use the mesh bag instead of plastic bags: it prevents moisture buildup and helps your harvest last longer.

The tool belt is about access: you don’t want to stop every time you need scissors or a knife. Keep tools at your hip.

Gloves are underrated: even if you’re skilled, a spiny vine or thistle can quickly end your outing.

Ethical foraging counts: as the guide on Chestnut Herbs says, sustainable gathering and proper gear go hand in hand.
