The art of writing is one of the greatest blessings that Allah has granted to humankind. It is through writing that knowledge is preserved, wisdom is shared, and divine guidance is recorded for generations to come. Writing became the foundation of civilization, education, and communication, and according to Islamic teachings, the first prophet to pioneer the use of a pen was Prophet Idris (peace be upon him).

Prophet Idris, known as Enoch in earlier scriptures, was one of the earliest prophets sent after Prophet Adam and Prophet Shith, peace be upon them both. He lived in a period when humanity was still learning how to survive, cultivate the earth, and establish societies. Allah honored Idris with wisdom, intelligence, and extraordinary skills, making him a symbol of knowledge and patience. The Holy Quran praises him in Surah Maryam, verses 56 and 57, where Allah says, “And mention in the Book Idris. Indeed, he was a man of truth and a prophet. And We raised him to a high station.” These verses highlight his honesty, his prophethood, and the exalted position Allah granted him.

Prophet Idris was not only a messenger but also a pioneer in many areas of human progress. According to Islamic traditions, he was the **first to write with a pen**, the first to record knowledge, and the first to teach people how to use writing as a means of preserving information. This great honor reflects Allah’s divine plan to make Idris the link between divine revelation and human civilization. Writing with a pen symbolized the dawn of human learning and the preservation of divine knowledge.

In Tafsir Ibn Kathir* and *Al-Bidayah wan Nihayah, it is narrated that Allah taught Idris the skill of writing so that he could record knowledge and revelation. Ibn Kathir reports that Prophet Idris was the first to use a pen for writing, the first to learn the science of astronomy, and the first to understand arithmetic. These skills enabled him to guide his people in matters of both religion and worldly affairs. The pen became the instrument through which divine wisdom was conveyed and preserved.

The Holy Quran emphasizes the importance of writing and the pen in several verses. In Surah Al-Alaq, verses 1 to 4, Allah says, “Read in the name of your Lord who created. Created man from a clot. Read, and your Lord is the Most Generous, who taught by the pen, taught man that which he knew not.” These verses reveal that writing and learning are sacred gifts from Allah, and they show how deeply writing is connected with divine knowledge. The mention of the pen in this first revelation to Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, reflects the same divine principle that began with Prophet Idris, who was the first to use the pen as a tool for knowledge.

Similarly, in Surah Al-Qalam, verse 1, Allah says, “Nun. By the pen and what they write.” In this verse, Allah swears by the pen, showing its importance and sanctity. Scholars of Islam, such as Imam Qurtubi and Imam Razi, explain that this verse not only refers to the divine pen that recorded the decrees of creation but also includes the pens of prophets and scholars who write to spread knowledge. Thus, the first use of the pen by Prophet Idris represents the beginning of this blessed tradition.

The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, also highlighted the value of writing in several Hadith. In Sunan Abu Dawood, Hadith number 3646, the Prophet said, “Bind knowledge by writing it down.” This Hadith reflects the same divine wisdom that began with Idris, peace be upon him, who bound divine knowledge through written records. The use of writing allowed prophetic teachings to be preserved accurately and spread widely, ensuring that the message of Allah would never be lost.

Prophet Idris’s writing was not limited to divine revelation alone. According to narrations, he also wrote about sciences such as medicine, astronomy, and mathematics. His written works helped his people understand the creation of Allah and live in harmony with the natural world. These writings became the foundation of human knowledge, and many scholars believe that he was among the first to establish organized teaching and learning among his people.

In addition to his contributions to knowledge, Prophet Idris was known for his patience and devotion. Allah mentions him in Surah Al-Anbiya, verse 85, saying, “And remember Ishmael, Idris, and Dhul-Kifl; all were of the patient.” This verse highlights his steadfastness and his commitment to spreading truth, even when people turned away from guidance.

Through the pen, Prophet Idris introduced a culture of learning that became central to all later prophets. His efforts paved the way for the revelation of divine scriptures — the Torah to Musa, the Zabur to Dawud, the Injeel to Isa, and finally the Quran to Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon them all. The tradition of writing that began with Idris allowed these holy books to be preserved and studied throughout history.

In conclusion, Prophet Idris (peace be upon him) was the first prophet to write with a pen. Allah blessed him with wisdom, knowledge, and understanding, making him a model of learning and patience. His story continues to remind believers that seeking knowledge and writing for the sake of truth is an act of worship that brings one closer to Allah, the All-Knowing and the All-Wise.
