Living Water And The Harvest: A Call to Be Used
At 4:12 this morning I heard the Lord say, read John 4. That simple instruction opened a floodgate of revelation and fresh fire. The story of the woman at the well is not just a historical account; it is a living blueprint for how God wants to move among us today. He is inviting us out of religion, into relationship, and into the rivers of living water that surge from the inside of every believer who carries Holy Spirit.
When Religion Keeps Score
Jesus had just left the Judean countryside because the Pharisees were keeping score. They were counting baptisms and ranking ministries like sports teams. I said it plainly: religion always keeps score. When something threatens its scoreboard, religion fights back because its power depends on people believing that numbers and appearance equal truth. The Pharisees became irate because Jesus and John were out-baptizing them, and that created rivalry in the people’s eyes.
Jesus refused to be boxed in by religious boundaries. He left the scene and walked another 120 miles to Galilee, and on the way he passed through Samaria. Imagine him tired, worn out, needing water. He sat at Jacob’s well at noon. That detail matters. Noon was the hottest hour, the time when a woman drawing water alone would have been socially isolated, carrying pain and shame. God meets us in those ordinary, exhausted moments.
The Woman at the Well: Living Water
When Jesus asked a Samaritan woman for a drink, the social rules screamed that this should not happen. Jews did not speak to Samaritans. Men did not engage alone with women of questionable repute. Yet Jesus pierced that cultural armor and offered something nobody could buy at the well: living water. Listen to this word from Jesus:
“Everyone who drinks this water will get thirsty again and again. But anyone who drinks the water that I will give will never thirst. Not ever. The water I give will be an artesian spring, gushing forth, fountains of endless life.”
The woman could only think of the physical bucket and well. She could not yet conceive of an artesian spring inside a human soul. That is the miracle Jesus offers: an inner source that does not run dry. When Holy Spirit takes residence, you stop chasing external things to satisfy the thirst inside you.
A Spring Within
Jesus said the water he gives springs from within. That is not religious ritual; that is Spirit reality. You cannot manufacture it with more programs, louder music, or bigger buildings. It is not about how we look in public or how many baptisms show up on a scoreboard. The artesian spring gushes from a heart touched by Jesus. It becomes a steady, life-giving force that changes how you live, speak, and reach out to others.
I prayed this morning that God would flood the sanctuary with that wellspring. That is my prayer for you: that you would be filled until you never thirst again; that hope and rejuvenation would come and that your faith would be substance — the substance of what you have always hoped for.
Worship in Spirit and Truth
Jesus told the woman that true worship would transcend mountain and tradition. The time was coming when worship would not be confined to a specific place or ritual. Worship is a matter of the heart, not a performance. He said:
“God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”
That means worship must engage your inner being. It must bubble up from your spirit. There is no right or wrong posture that defines true worship. Whether you lift your hands, close your eyes, or stand quiet, what matters is whether your spirit is honestly engaged with God. If your worship is genuine, it will reach into the depths and bring transformation.
Deprogramming Tradition
The disciples were shocked that Jesus spoke with that kind of woman. Their faces portrayed and projected it, and the woman took the hint and left. Too often our faces say what our mouths will not: we judge, we exclude, and we chase people away. Jesus calls us to get beyond the crust of religious tradition so the love of God can flow through us to the thirsty and the broken.
My wife and brothers and sisters, do not let religion teach you how to respond to people. Let Holy Spirit lead you into compassion. Let the love of a stranger become the catalyst for a life-changing encounter. I remember my first time being prayed for. I had never prayed for anyone and I had never been prayed for in that way. Strangers spoke love into me and it changed everything. That love was not about eloquence or qualifications; it was the presence of Jesus flowing through human lips. It moved me, changed me, and it's still being paid forward now twenty something years later.
From Encounter to Harvest
Jesus looked at the Samaritan fields and said, "Look, the fields are ripe for harvest." He wasn’t talking about agriculture only; he was talking about people. The places we live — our streets, neighborhoods, and workplaces — are the Samaria fields. They are filled with people who are hungry for a touch they cannot name. The harvest is not all in some future heaven; it is now. God’s Spirit has already been poured out. We simply need to open our mouths and our hands.
Open your eyes to the people around you.
Notice the one limping in pain or walking in fear.
Ask a simple question: "Can I pray for you?"
Lay your hand on their shoulder and declare freedom in Jesus' name.
God promises that whatever we bind on earth is bound in heaven. You do not need a seminary degree to be used. You need a willing heart and Holy Spirit will provide the words and power.
You Are the Vessel — Let Him Use You
We are called to be new wineskins, humble and obedient vessels that can contain the fresh wine of God’s Spirit. The Lord is not looking for perfect people. He is looking for available people. If you have been afraid to reach out, let me tell you: put down that fear. God wants to use your ordinary life to change someone else’s eternal trajectory.
It does not take long. I have seen entire encounters that changed a life in less than 15 seconds. A few words, a prayer, a touch — and the Holy Spirit moves. Sometimes you will see physical healings immediately. Sometimes you will see hearts break and come to Christ over time. Either way, you will know that it was not you — it was him flowing through you. That is one of the great faith-building gifts God gives: the proof that He uses weak vessels to display His strength.
Practical Steps: How to Release Living Water
Stop keeping score. Religion will make you defensive; the Spirit will make you compassionate.
Engage your spirit in worship. Let genuine adoration bubble up without fear of how you look.
Listen for simple promptings. If you sense someone near you needs prayer, act on it.
Speak love. Say, "God loves you," "Can I pray?" or "I break that spirit of fear in Jesus' name."
Be consistent. Do it again and again. The more you obey, the stronger the anointing becomes.
Legacy of Faith: Terry’s Story
I want to tell you about Terry. He came to my house three times this past year. He believed. He was 81 years old, pinned to sickness, but he kept coming back. He never received the physical healing he begged for while he was with us, yet he left a legacy that continues to bear fruit because he was filled with living water. He declared his faith to his last breath. People saw the transformation from a man who wrestled with demons and addictions to a man passionately anchored in Jesus. That is what living water does — it outlives the suit of flesh and testifies that the spirit returns to the Father's embrace.
When you allow Holy Spirit to reshape you, your life becomes a testimony. Your story will outlive you. The ripple effects of one transformed soul are immeasurable. That is why we must continue to press in, to pour ourselves out, to be used by God in the messy places.
A Final Word of Exhortation
Do not shrink back. Do not hide behind religious purity tests or fear of looking foolish. God delights in using ordinary, honest people. If you have a heart that loves Jesus, you already qualify. Let the love of God come out of your mouth. Say the name of Jesus. Lay a hand on a shoulder. Bind fear, loose faith, and watch the harvest begin right where you are.
God’s best is not behind us. It is right in front of us. The saints have been waiting since the ages began for this season. Keep your spirit, soul, and body on the altar. Focus wholly on what Jesus has done and let Him direct your steps. The more you obey, the more the Holy Spirit strengthens you. The more you love, the more lives will be changed through you.
I have been pressing in for months to hear God. Sometimes I hear him clearly, sometimes I do not. Even in the waiting, I still let Him use me. He wants to use you too. If you will open your mouth and your heart, God will flow through you. This is not a one-time invitation. It is an ongoing call to be the hands and feet of Jesus—every day, in little encounters, in loud moments and quiet ones, to bring people out of darkness into glorious light.
Do not allow fear of failure to stop you. Stay humble, stay available, and let Him use you. The fields are ripe. The living water is within. Go and harvest.
