End Of the World (Skeeter Davis, 1963). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2025-08-03. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"

"End Of the World," written by Sylvia Dee and Arthur Kent, was Skeeter Davis' highest charting single on the Billboard Hot 100 rising to the no. 2 position; however, the song was "the most successful 'crossover' hit on Billboard's 4 major singles charts" (Hot 100, no. 2; Adult Contemporary, no. 2; Country & Western, no. 2; and R&B, no. 4) (Whitburn, 2013). This feat has yet to be accomplished by any other female artist (songfacts, 2025). In the film 'Girl, Interrupted,' character Daisy Randon, was playing Davis' song on her record player repeatedly while she committed suicide (J. Mangold [director], 'Girl, Interrupted,' 1999).

Lyrics:

Why does the sun go on shining?
Why does the sea rush to shore?
Don't they know it's the end of the world
'Cause you don't love me anymore?

Why do the birds go on singing?
Why do the stars glow above?
Don't they know it's the end of the world?
It ended when I lost your love

I wake up in the morning and I wonder
Why everything's the same as it was
I can't understand, no, I can't understand
How life goes on the way it does

Why does my hair heart go on beating?
Why do these eyes of mine cry?
Don't they know it's the end of the world?
It ended when you said goodbye

Why does my heart go on beating? (Mm-mm)
Why do these eyes of mine cry? (Mm-mm)
Don't they know it's the end of the world?
It ended when you said goodbye
