The Fearful Rebellion of Bani Israel | Lessons from Surah Al-Ma’idah (verse 20–26)

Brothers, sisters, friends and elders Assalamu Alaikum, wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu, we are presenting the 80th episode of the Islamic informative video based on healing and events from the Holy Quran, and in this video we will describe,The Fearful Rebellion of Bani Israel | Lessons from Surah Al-Ma’idah (verse 20–26)

Verses 20–26 of Surah Al-Ma’idah recount a significant and powerful episode in the history of Bani Israel (the Children of Israel), centered around their disobedience and fear in response to Prophet Musa’s (Moses) call to enter the Holy Land. This narrative not only provides a historical account of a particular event but also conveys timeless lessons about faith, courage, trust in Allah, and the consequences of collective cowardice and rebellion against divine commands.

The story begins with verse 20 of Surah Al-Ma’idah, where Allah reminds the believers of how Musa addressed his people: **“And \[mention], O Muhammad, when Moses said to his people, ‘O my people, remember the favor of Allah upon you when He appointed among you prophets and made you kings and gave you what He had not given anyone among the worlds.’”** Here, Musa reminds Bani Israel of the immense blessings and favors Allah had bestowed upon them. They were not an ordinary nation; Allah had honored them with prophets, granted them leadership and authority, and provided them with divine guidance unlike any other community of their time. This was meant to awaken their gratitude and sense of responsibility. The favor was not just material—it was spiritual and moral, a sacred duty to live according to divine will.

In verse 21 of Surah Al-Ma’idah, Musa then calls his people to action: **“O my people, enter the Holy Land which Allah has assigned to you and do not turn back and \[thus] become losers.”** The Holy Land—commonly understood to be the region of Palestine—was divinely promised to them as a place of settlement and prosperity, contingent upon their obedience and struggle in the path of Allah. Musa's words are firm and encouraging. He calls on them to enter with faith and determination, warning them that turning away would result in loss and humiliation.

However, the response from Bani Israel was marked by fear and defeatism. In verse 22 of Surah Al-Ma’idah, they replied: **“They said, ‘O Moses, indeed within it is a people of tyrannical strength, and indeed, we will never enter it until they leave it; but if they leave it, then we will enter.’”** This reveals a deep-seated fear and lack of trust in Allah’s promise. Despite being commanded by a prophet and reminded of Allah’s favors, their worldly fears overtook their faith. They refused to confront the challenges ahead, insisting they would only proceed once the powerful inhabitants had been removed—without any effort on their part. This response reflects their weak resolve and unwillingness to struggle in obedience to Allah.

Among the group, only two men, described in verse 23 of Surah Al-Ma’idah, demonstrated true faith and courage: **“Said two men from those who feared \[to disobey] upon whom Allah had bestowed favor, ‘Enter upon them through the gate, for when you have entered it, you will be victorious. And rely upon Allah, if you should be believers.’”** These men, whose hearts were firm in belief and trust, urged their people to act with courage and confidence in Allah. They recognized that victory comes not from numbers or strength, but from faith and reliance on the Creator. Their advice was straightforward: take the first step, trust in Allah, and success will follow.

Sadly, Bani Israel responded with open defiance. In verse 24 of Surah Al-Ma’idah, they said: **“O Moses, indeed we will not enter it, ever, as long as they are within it; so go, you and your Lord, and fight. Indeed, we are remaining right here.”** This statement represents one of the most shocking and rebellious replies recorded in the Qur’an. They not only refused to act, but they also disassociated themselves from their prophet’s mission, telling Musa and even Allah to go and fight alone. Their words reflected utter ingratitude, arrogance, and spiritual blindness, despite all the miracles and favors they had witnessed.

The consequences of this rebellion were severe. In verse 26 of Surah Al-Ma’idah, Allah declared: **“\[Allah] said, ‘Then indeed, it is forbidden to them for forty years \[in which] they will wander throughout the land. So do not grieve over the defiantly disobedient people.’”** As a result of their cowardice and disobedience, Allah punished them by condemning them to wander aimlessly in the desert for forty years. This generation was denied entry to the promised land, and they lived in a state of deprivation and uncertainty. Their lack of faith and refusal to act cost them the very reward they were offered.

This story serves as a powerful lesson for all believers. Faith is not just belief in the heart but requires action, courage, and trust in Allah’s promise—even in the face of apparent difficulty. Bani Israel’s failure stemmed not from physical weakness but from spiritual weakness. The Qur’an presents this episode not merely to recount the past but to instruct the Muslim Ummah to avoid such attitudes of fear, disobedience, and ingratitude. True success lies in obeying Allah without hesitation and trusting that He will fulfill His promises, even when the path seems daunting.

With this, we ask for your permission until tomorrow and pray to Allah Almighty to grant us the ability to act on the Quran and Hadith, Amen

Allah Hafiz
