When you diet by cutting calories, your body makes more of a hormone called ghrelin, which makes you feel hungry. This happens because your body thinks it’s not getting enough energy and tries to push you to eat more. Even after you stop dieting, ghrelin levels can stay high for 6 months or more, keeping you hungrier than usual. For example, a study from 2011 found that people who lost weight had higher ghrelin levels for a year afterward, which made them crave food and often regain weight. This lingering ghrelin boost, along with a slower metabolism, is why you feel extra hungry for a long time after dieting.
