Start really light, I was legitimately sore after the 3 demo reps I did on my left side. The glute medius is the side glute used to lift your leg to the side or, in this case, when you push to the side to move weight. Pushing in this fashion (to the side away fron you) will isolate the glute medius more. Push with the outside of foot and closer to heel. Bend at the hips more than the knee as well. You can also set this up with a Landmine Barbell if you don't have a Smith machine or Smith is too heavy.
