survey reveals' over 1.1 million honey bee colonies lost raising alarm for pollination and agriculture

Honey bees and other pollinators are a vital part of U.S. agriculture — supporting production of most of the fruits, nuts, and vegetables grown in the U.S., with an approximate $19 billion in agricultural production annually.

Honey bee health is a critical, bipartisan issue that touches beekeepers, farmers, consumers, workers, businesses, and rural and urban communities from coast to coast and from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico.

That is why the Honey Bee Health Coalition urges you to prioritize the health of honey bees and other pollinators and to partner with us to implement practical, collaborative strategies to support honey bee health.

Honeybee deaths have hit record highs in the US, with the unprecedented loss of colonies pushing many beekeepers close to ruin as scientists scramble to identify the main cause of the huge declines.

Commercial beekeepers have reported losing more than 60% of their colonies, on average, over the winter, according to an ongoing Project Apis survey that covers more than two-thirds of America’s managed bees.

The loss of bees, both captive and wild, in the US is already starting to limit the supply of some food crops and is reducing the yield of honey.

There are likely many factors causing the decline.
What can you do?
We’ll if you are up to it try beekeeping.
It is an awesome hobby and I’ll help you.
Also, plant bee friendly plants.
Some that are particularly alluring to bees include: Lavender, Sunflowers, Clover, Wildflowers, Borage, Rosemary, Coneflowers, Monarda (bee balm), Blueberries, Black-eyed Susans.

Let your lawn grow with clover a couple months out of the summer.
And DO NOT use nasty chemical pesticides harmful to bees.
There are safer alternatives.
Do your part.
PROTECTING BEES BENEFITS US ALL.

It’s spring, dandelions are the bees first food. Bees die from weed killer spread on what we they see as weeds, but what nature sees as food.

Please don’t spray for weeds until you see the blackberries blooming.
In this area, weeds, flowers and fruit trees are bees only source of food until middle of June.
There are FAR more weeds than flowers or fruit trees, so it's their only food source. No bees, no food crops for us and we all starve.

The letter lays out a set of policy priorities that a number of Coalition members urged lawmakers to consider as they develop the next Farm Bill. These priorities include:

USDA conservation program lands are essential to honey bee health and their acreage should be increased.

The pollinator value and cost-effectiveness of plantings should be maximized on USDA conservation program lands, including through improving pollinator-specific programs and enhancing other programs to include pollinator habitat.

Landowners and producers need flexibility to take management actions to benefit honey bees and other pollinators, including mid-contract management activities.

Honey Bee Health Coalition Letter to USDA & EPA
October 16, 2014honey-health

The Honorable Thomas Vilsack Secretary
U.S. Department of Agriculture
1400 Independence Ave., S.W.
Washington, DC 20250

The Honorable Regina McCarthy Administrator
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
Office of the Administrator – 1101A
1200 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W.
Washington, DC 20460

Dear Mr. Secretary and Madam Administrator,
As leaders charged by the President to coordinate federal efforts to research, prevent, and recover from pollinator losses,
you know that a lot rides on the health of the honey bee. You are in a unique position to help safeguard global food production, North American agriculture,
and healthy ecosystems across the world, which is why we want to work with you to improve honey bee health.

The Honey Bee Health Coalition is one of the largest and most diverse groups of stakeholders representing more than 30 organizations working across food, agriculture,
government, and conservation to reverse recent declines in honey bee health and promote their long-term health and the health of other pollinators.

By coordinating together on key priorities we can include a broader set of stakeholders and achieve our mutual goals faster, with greater impact, and do so more cost effectively.

To that end, the Coalition issued the attached Bee Healthy Roadmap outlining steps for working together to improve honey bee health that will accomplish more than any one group can achieve on its own.

The Coalition is committed to developing explicit goals, milestones and metrics to measure improvements in honey bee health.

We’re working to achieve Healthy Honey Bees, Healthy People, and a Healthy Planet and we set ourselves four priority areas that need collective, science-based action:

• Put the best available tools, techniques, and technologies in the hands of beekeepers so they can better manage their hives.
As noted in the Presidential Memorandum creating a federal strategy to promote the health of honey bees and other pollinators, we need ‘
…expanded collection and sharing of data related to pollinator losses [and] technologies for continuous monitoring of honey bee hive health…
and new cost-effective ways to control bee pests and diseases.’
Therefore, the Coalition aims to support on-the ground efforts underway to provide beekeepers with monitoring and expert advice and analyses to best manage hive health,
as well as to promote development of new products and use of best practices for varroa mite control.

• Ensure honey bees – especially those in and around production agriculture – have access to a varied and nutritious diet. Our work aligns with the Pollinator Health Task Force focus on pollinator-friendly seed mixes and habitats.
The Coalition is working on how to prioritize where forage is needed, what plants are needed, and at what times
– and on public-private strategies to meet nutritional needs.

• Control crop pests while safeguarding pollinator health.
The Coalition is promoting best practices to safeguard honey bee health and exploring opportunities to promote and improve reporting of honey bee health incidents related to crop pest control.
These activities align with the Task Force’s work toward ‘identification of existing and new methods and best practices to reduce pollinator exposure to pesticides.’

• Work together to improve honey bee health. In alignment with the Task Force’s emphasis on public-private partnerships,
the Coalition is promoting public-private collaboration across diverse stakeholders, including State and and local governments, farmers, corporations, and nongovernmental organizations.

Together we can collaboratively implement solutions among food, agriculture, government, and conservation partners.
Together we can achieve a healthy population of honey bees as well as healthy populations of native and managed pollinators. Together we can ensure
healthy, sustainable agriculture and healthy ecosystems, and healthy ecosystem services for years to come.

Knowing that the Coalition can’t improve honey bee health on its own, we want to provide you with this Roadmap to share the priorities we’ve identified and ask for your input and feedback so that we can effectively work with you, as appropriate, to achieve our mutual goals.
We would like to schedule some time for members of the Coalition to meet with you to review this Roadmap in the coming weeks.
Would the first or second week of November be a convenient time? If not, please suggest a time that would.
I can be reached at (970) 513-5830 or jshapiro@keystone.org to coordinate on scheduling or to provide further information.

“Bees are testing with 70 times more aluminum in their systems than what is required to cause alzheimers or dementia in humans.
This shows the evidence and highlights the widespread environmental contamination affecting both wildlife and humans.

The study found that bees exposed to high levels of aluminum suffer from cognitive dysfunction, which can disrupt their ability to forage and navigate ultimately threatening survival.

Given the critical role bees play in pollination and maintaining biodiversity their health is a direct indicator of environmental quality.

The fact that such high aluminum concentrations can cause severe neurological damage in bees suggests a similar risk for humans, as environmental toxins often infect multiple species.

This correlations shows the urgent need to address environmental pollutants to protect both ecological systems and human health, reinforcing the interconnectedness of our ecosystem.
The decline of bee populations worldwide poses a major threat to agriculture, as bees play a crucial role in pollinating crops.

Reduced bee numbers lead to lower crops yields and can jeopardize food security.
This is also driven by factors like pesticide use, habitat loss and environmental factors.
We are all exposed to a high amount of heavy metals on a daily basis as they come from everyday items we use consistently.

Cosmetics, cookware, baby formula, baby food, carpets and furniture, the air, tap water, aluminum foil, & 💉's, popular fruit juices, chocolate, cereals, protein powders, pharmaceuticals, spices, rice, etc.

So many symptoms, health issues and auto immune illnesses stem from toxicity. Heavy metal toxicity being the most common and always misdiagnosed.”

EPA Proposes to Reapprove Bee-killing Pesticides With Token Restrictions

https://www.commondreams.org/newswire/2020/01/30/epa-proposes-reapprove-bee-killing-pesticides-token-restrictions

The problem with fipronil
Fipronil is widely used as a broad-spectrum insecticide that acts on the central nervous system to control pests.
According to entomologist Dr. Reed Johnson, fipronil is highly toxic to bees (LD50 = 4 ng/bee), blocking GABA, the primary inhibitory compound in the central nervous system, thus causing hyperexcitation and eventual death (Johnson 2015).

Fipronil is being used as a non-EPA approved substance in the beekeeping industry to control in-hive SHB infestations.
Research shows Fipronil has lethal and sublethal effects on honeybees, impairing drone and queen fecundity and colony collapse (Kairo et al. 2018, Holder et al. 2018).

Research conducted by Kairo et al. placed drones in colonies that were fed either sugar syrup or fipronil (1 µg·L-1) contaminated syrup in small time intervals for 20 days. After 20 days,
sexually mature drones were removed from exposed colonies and their semen was collected for quality assessment (spermatozoa concentration, spermatozoa mortality rate, reducing potential, ATP content).
Queens were then artificially inseminated with the semen from control or exposed drones.

Experimental findings did not detect observable amounts of fipronil or associated metabolites in chemical analysis.
Individual assessment of worker and drone survival did not appear to be negatively affected by exposure.
These results are likely due to low levels of fipronil exposure.
Behavioral effects are only observed at concentrations greater than 1 µg·L-1. Fipronil exposure decreases total spermatozoa concentration, increases spermatozoa mortality rate
(Figure 2AB), and alters cellular function resulting in physiological disruptions, oxidative stress and reduced fecundity (Figure 2CD).
Queens inseminated with fipronil exposed drones stored fewer spermatozoa with higher levels of dead spermatozoa compared to the control (Figure 3BD).
These results indicate impaired fecundity in queens indirectly exposed to fipronil.

Fipronil is a common pesticide used in agriculture and sparked an international food scandal last summer because the toxic substance was used illegally in chicken stables, contaminating eggs and eggs derivatives. So far, 26 European countries and 23 non-EU countries —
in total 49 countries — have been affected.
The extent of the contamination shows how our food and agriculture system is broken.
It’s time to leave toxic substances behind and rethink the food we eat and produce.
