Even before his illness, DJ harbored a dream of joining law enforcement. His aspirations took root in 2017 when, during the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, police officers showed kindness to his family by delivering pizza to them while they sought refuge in a shelter.

Originally starting his law enforcement journey with the Pearland Police Department, close to his hometown; DJ's remarkable story has led to him being embraced by several other law enforcement agencies. Beyond receiving badges, uniforms, and certificates, DJ's role is far from merely symbolic.

DJ leverages his visibility to raise awareness about childhood cancer and to pay tribute to the memory of Abigail Arias, a courageous 7 year-old girl with similar aspirations in law enforcement. Before succumbing to lung cancer in 2019, Arias was sworn in as an honorary officer of the Freeport Police Department.
