Backbone Rock - The SHORTEST tunnel in the world!

Backbone Rock is located in the Cherokee National Forest in Shady Valley, Tennessee just a stone's throw from Damascus Virginia (home of Appalachian Trail Days!). The rock formation is a spur off of the Holston Mountain Range and the tunnel was blasted out in 1901 when the lumber industry ran a rail line through the area. After only 20 some-odd years, the rail line was removed and the passage designated for automobiles!

The Backbone Rock Trail is only a half-mile but it takes you to the top of the ridge for a really neat ridgeline experience!
