There are several words in the Bible used to describe sin. Sin is somewhat familiar to most of us, but what about iniquity? Is it just a synonym for sin, or does it have a deeper meaning? Is iniquity more specific or a more general term for sin? Today, we dig into the Scriptures to learn about the true meaning of iniquity.

Iniquity - עָוֹן (aw-vone’): perversity, depravity, iniquity, guilt or punishment of iniquity
guilt of iniquity, guilt (as great), guilt (of condition)
consequence of or punishment for iniquity

Amorites - אֱמֹרִי (em-o-ree’): Amorite = "a sayer"
one of the peoples of east Canaan and beyond the Jordan, dispossessed by the Israelite incursion from Egypt

Takeaway:
Iniquity has existed since the beginning and was first identified with the way of Cain. It was closely associated with the Amorites, who were undoubtedly cohabiting, if not intermingling, with giants. They worshipped other gods and sacrificed their children in the fire to Molech. God said He would visit the iniquities of the fathers upon the children to the fourth generation, indicating that iniquity has a covenantal connection with demonic entities.
