  • Sen Mike Lee explained how Article 1, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution gives Congress the power to declare war and “grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal,” which authorize private citizens to outfit private warships and sink or capture enemy vessels. Privateers get to keep part of the “bounty” they capture and turn the rest over to the government. The last time Congress exercised the power—which was more than 200 years ago—it was an affordable way for the state to disrupt the economies of its enemies and help fund the U.S. war effort. Today, privateering is considered a violation of international law and the U.S. has agreed not to do it. But Lee thinks the U.S. should bring it back to tackle the cartels, which he claims are threatening to target U.S. planes deporting undocumented immigrants. “Congress could issue letters of marque and reprisal authorizing private security firms or specially trained civilians to intercept cartel operations, particularly those involving drug shipments or human trafficking across borders,” he wrote.

  • For years, a US flag was painted on the floor of Iran’s presidential compound, strategically located so that visitors would trample over the Stars and Stripes on their way in. Shortly before Donald Trump’s inauguration, however, the flag was quietly removed. There was no official explanation from Iranian officials. But the move captured a quiet shift in Tehran’s thinking, in what is shaping up to be its most consequential year since the 1980s Iran-Iraq war: with the country at its most vulnerable point in years, officials hope they can avoid confrontation and even strike a deal with the new president.

  • “While we resist US pressure, we will also signal a willingness to negotiate,” said a relative of Khamenei. “Iran is working to minimise actions that might provoke Washington, even if no agreement is eventually reached.” The relative of Khamenei acknowledged that Israel’s attacks on Iran and the so-called “axis of resistance” of Tehran-backed militant groups, including Hizbollah and Hamas, had led Iranian leaders to reassess their perception of the republic’s power in the Middle East.

  • On Saturday, the Post published a story about the Palestinians who were released from Israeli custody as part of the hostage agreement made with Hamas. "According to Samidoun, an activist network supporting Palestinian prisoners, the group includes journalists, activists, teachers, students and close relatives of high-profile Hamas figures," the Post wrote, including a link to a Samidoun article published earlier in the week. Samidoun, however, was singled out by the Biden administration in October as being financially linked to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), which has been designated as a terrorist organization by numerous countries, including the U.S. and the European Union.

  • You would do well to note that many Americans buy Chinese parts for their products because it is more cost-effective to do so. If you make it not so, with sanction or regulation etc, then won't that mean less trade for American products using Chinese parts in the future?
