Red Rubber Ball - Cyrkle, The (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Red Rubber Ball (Cyrkle, The, 1966). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2025-01-25. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"Red Rubber Ball," written by Paul Simon and Bruce Woodley, was The Circle's first entry onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart and the band's first of two top 40 hits landing at no. 2 on the chart in 1966 (Whitburn, 2013). Woodley was a member of The Seekers and suggested that they record the song, but his bandmates decided not to record it, although they did eventually record it and placed it on their "Georgie Girl" LP later in '66 (songfacts, 2025). During an interview with Angie Moon, Don Dannemann [the band's guitarist and vocalist] said that "Bandmate Tommy Dawes found 'Red Rubber Ball' on a demo by Paul Simon. . . [We] we’re looking for material to record and Tommy brought in this 45 and we hear Paul Simon singing 'Red Rubber Ball' just with a guitar and we thought, ‘Yeah, cute song. Let’s try that’" (A. Moon, crazyonclassicrock, May 4, 2024). They had a hit. As an aside, The Cyrkle were managed by The Beatles' manager, Brian Epstein, and they opened for The Beatles on The Beatles' last tour in 1966, and, at the time, the band was actually named The Rhondells, but Epstein talked with John Lennon who said the band should change their name and suggested "The Cyrkle" with the odd spelling (A. Moon, crazyonclassicrock, May 4, 2024).

Lyrics:
I should have known
You'd bid me farewell
There's a lesson to be learned from this
And I learned it very well
Now I know you're not the only starfish in the sea
If I never hear your name again
It's all the same to me
And I think,
It's gonna be alright
Yeah,
The worst is over now
The mornin' sun is shining
Like a red rubber ball
You never care
For secrets I confide
For you I'm just an ornament
Something for your pride
Always running, never caring
That's the life you live
Stolen minutes of your time
Were all you had to give
And I think
It's gonna be alright
Yeah
The worst is over now
The mornin' sun is shining
Like a red rubber ball
The story's in the past
With nothing to recall
I've got my life to live
And I don't need you at all
The rollercoaster ride we took
Is nearly at an end
I bought my ticket with my tears
That's all I'm gonna spend
And I think,
It's gonna be alright
Yeah,
The worst is over now
The mornin' sun is shining
Like a red rubber ball
Oh...
I think
It's gonna be alright
Yeah
The worst is over now
The mornin' sun is shining
Like a red rubber ball...
