Who Was the Heretic Marcion?

If you haven’t noticed already there’s been a rise and resurgence of Modern Day Marcionism, of course they don’t call it that. So what is it? Well, it’s an old lie, being repackaged in these end times by, expectantly, opponents to the Bible, but even worse some claiming to be Bible Scholars.

It’s similar to Gnosticism, in the sense that they believe that Yahweh is the Creator, however not the Source of All Things. Some even claim that Father revealed by Jesus, was not Yahweh, yet was this Source.

Masquerading as Bible Scholars, they claim to be TEACHING, yet are only TWISTING the truth of what both Jesus, and the Apostle Paul taught. In doing so, they align themselves with the excommunicated heretic of the 2nd century, Marcion, himself.

But who was Marcion? And what did he believe? And how are his views on Yahweh being repackaged today by these so-called modern scholars? Well, for the answers to these questions and more, join us as we explore the life, beliefs, and ongoing influence of Marcion of Sinope.

  • For anyone looking for a more thorough assessment of the evidence and information about St. Marcion and the first Christian canon he compiled: check out the work done being done by scholars like Jason David BeDuhn, Matthias Klinghardt, and Markus Vinzent. An excellent place to start is Jason BeDuhn's book, The First New Testament: Marcion's Scriptural Canon, which can be read for free online. Marcionite Priority (the hypothesis that the canon compiled by Marcion is the original version of the New Testament that Paul wrote) is much more nuanced than this content producer "ibelievex" presents it to be, and you owe it to yourself to do actual research on this matter rather than just blindly accept some lazy 7-minute dismissal of the evidence. Much of the information in this video is inaccurate and repeats disinformation that Wikipedia has locked. One quick example to illustrate that point: the claim that Marcion edited the gospel. There is absolutely no evidence to support the claim that Marcion edited a pre-existing gospel in order to create Evangelion. As BeDuhn has put it: "In short, the acceptance by modern researchers of the claims made about Marcion’s handling of the texts included in his New Testament is an example of uncritical adoption of polemic as his- tory.33 First, Tertullian and his associates in this charge against Marcion are working from an anti-Marcionite bias that shapes their assumptions. Second, they are writing from a position in time that makes it impossible for them to have any sure knowl- edge of the state of either anything like a New Testament canon or its constituent books at the time of Marcion. Third, we know for a fact that several of their assumptions are incorrect: there was no New Testament canon before Marcion, from which the latter rejected parts unsuited to him;34 there was no larger Pauline cor- pus from which Marcion excised the Pastorals; there was no uni- versal, undisputed orthodoxy from which Marcion...
