Nearly 38,000 people were evacuated. At least 28 people have died, and 32 were injured. Over 9,200 firefighters and rescuers, along with 105 helicopters, were involved in the efforts. Despite the massive response, the fires remain out of control due to strong winds and dry weather. #StormMartinho On March 19 and 20, a powerful storm named “Martinho” hit Portugal, bringing torrential rains and hurricane-force winds. The Greater Lisbon area was hardest hit, with at least 8 people injured. In Cascais, strong winds flipped several small aircraft at an airfield. The next day, March 21, “Martinho” moved into Spain. In the city of Águilas, 70 mm of rain fell in just one hour. In Madrid, continuous rainfall made March 2025 the wettest March on record. #Malaysia Starting March 19, relentless heavy rains hit the southern state of Johor. In six districts, river levels rose above danger thresholds, causing flash floods. In Kampung Pasir Tebrau, water rose so high that only rooftops remained visible. More than 13,000 people were evacuated and relocated to 95 temporary shelters. #SaudiArabia Extreme rainfall struck Saudi Arabia starting March 19. In the Riyadh region, three months’ worth of rain fell in just three days. In Jeddah, the amount of rainfall in two days matched the city’s annual average. In the Asir region, the downpours were accompanied by large hail, covering mountain peaks and roads in a winter-like landscape. #Russia A sharp warming caused an early ice breakup on the Sim and Gumbeika rivers in the Chelyabinsk region. In the city of Asha, the flooding began so rapidly that many residents couldn’t save their belongings or pets. On March 23, a powerful snow cyclone struck Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, dropping over 82 cm of snow in two days — more than the entire previous winter, according to local officials. In Primorsky Krai, two deep-focus earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 and 4.4 occurred within 24 hours. Hundreds of temperature records were broken in Siberia last week. On March 19, Novosibirsk recorded its warmest day in 102 years. Intense and prolonged rains have caused floods, landslides, and ground collapses. In March, the western provinces were hit the hardest, with 22 rivers overflowing and 25 more rapidly rising. On March 8, an extreme downpour in the city of Portoviejo, Manabí province, left some areas flooded up to an adult's neck. Tropical cyclone Alfred Meteorologists initially predicted that cyclone Alfred would dissipate over the ocean, as is typical for storms following a similar trajectory. However, on March 4, it unexpectedly turned westward and headed toward the Australian coast. In Gold Coast, flooding turned city streets into rivers, and bull sharks appeared in the floodwaters. In Brisbane, 275 mm of rain fell in just 24 hours, making it the wettest day in 50 years. The storm left 330,000 homes and businesses in Queensland without power — the largest weather-related blackout in the region’s history. Kazakhstan On the evening of March 7, residents of Almaty witnessed a rare natural phenomenon — snowfall accompanied by thunder and lightning. Eyewitnesses said they had never seen anything like it before, and some even mistook the rumbling for an earthquake. USA An EF2 tornado struck Seminole County, Florida, on the morning of March 10, with wind speeds exceeding 185 km/h. Meanwhile, other regions are suffering from record-breaking rains, wildfires, and hurricanes. In the next few minutes, we will cover the climate events that occurred across the planet from February 26 to March 4. Spain Since late February, Spain has been hit by heavy rains, snowstorms, and floods. The regions of Murcia, Andalusia, and Valencia recorded record rainfall, reaching up to 258 L/m² in Castellón province. In Lorca, one person died while attempting to drive through a flooded riverbed. In Soria, around 500 vehicles were stranded. Japan On February 26, a wildfire broke out in the city of Ofunato, engulfing 2,100 hectares. Nearly 1,700 firefighters and 18 helicopters were deployed to battle the flames. A total of 84 buildings were damaged, and one person lost their life. February saw record-low precipitation in Ofunato — less than 10% of the normal level — worsening the fire hazard. Tropical Cyclone "Garance" On February 28, Tropical Cyclone "Garance" struck Réunion Island. Winds of up to 214 km/h and torrential rains destroyed infrastructure. Around 180,000 homes were left without electricity, water, and communication, and four people lost their lives. Southern Hemisphere On February 25, six tropical cyclones were simultaneously active in the Indian and Pacific Oceans — an event unseen in decades. This season has been exceptionally intense, with 22 recorded cyclones whose total energy is 30% above normal (according to the ACE scale). Afghanistan Since February 25, Afghanistan has been experiencing heavy rainfall, snowstorms, and flooding. At least 46 people have died, and over 200 homes have been destroyed. In February, a hailstorm and downpour in Farah province swept away several climbers during an ascent. On March 1, a landslide in Uruzgan destroyed a home. USA In early March, wildfires broke out in South and North Carolina. On March 1, a fire in Carolina Forest spread across 650 hectares, forcing evacuations. Strong winds and smoke reduced visibility, and schools moved classes indoors. India At the end of February, intense rainfall hit the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, triggering flash floods, landslides, and mudslides. More than 400 roads, including four national highways, were closed. On February 28, a massive avalanche buried a construction site near the village of Mana in Uttarakhand state. A total of 54 people were trapped under tons of snow. Rescuers managed to save 46, but tragically, eight lost their lives. Russia In Primorye, wildfires started two weeks earlier than usual, destroying 18 structures. Since the beginning of the year, 131 forest fires have been recorded in the Primorsky Krai, affecting more than 14,000 hectares. Since early 2025, Russia—including its Arctic region — has experienced increased seismic activity. However, particular attention is drawn to the M5.0 earthquake that struck the Krasnoyarsk Krai beyond the Arctic Circle on March 2. The epicenter was located 650 km from the city of Norilsk. Notably, an earthquake of this magnitude is highly unusual for the typically seismically quiet Taymyr region. According to the VolcanoDiscovery portal, this was the first recorded earthquake in this area since 1900. Georgia Heavy snowfall disrupted transportation in western Georgia, leading to train cancellations. In Oswego County (New York), where over 180 cm of snow fell in just a week, the weight of the snow caused 26 building roofs to collapse. The Arctic cold and snowstorms led to more than 1,500 accidents and at least four deaths. In Detroit (Michigan), vehicles were frozen solid in ice after a massive water pipe burst. China On February 20, a massive avalanche struck Meili Xue Shan Mountain (Yunnan Province) after prolonged snowfall. Australia On February 14, Cyclone Zelia struck the Pilbara region with wind gusts reaching 290 km/h and torrential rains. Some areas received up to 500 mm of rainfall in just three days, leading to record-breaking floods. - Several ports in the region, including Port Hedland — one of the world’s largest iron ore export hubs — were forced to shut down. - The storm caused extensive damage to infrastructure, uprooted hundreds of trees, destroyed buildings, and severely impacted agriculture. Saudi Arabia Starting February 14, a severe storm with hail caused a sudden cold snap in western Saudi Arabia. - Heavy rains triggered flooding, while strong winds stirred up dust and sand. Waves in the Red Sea reached heights of up to 2 meters. - In the city of Taif, hailstorms created rushing ice-filled rivers. - In the capital, Riyadh, more than 6,500 emergency workers and 1,800 vehicles were deployed to respond to the crisis. United States - February 13: An atmospheric river hit California, bringing torrential rain, thunderstorms, and hurricane-force winds. The worst damage occurred in wildfire-ravaged southern areas, where the burnt ground repelled water like asphalt. This led to devastating mudslides, flash floods, and landslides. - In Malibu, a fire department vehicle carrying a firefighter was swept into the ocean by debris-filled floodwaters. Fortunately, the firefighter survived with minor injuries. - February 15–16: A powerful storm swept across the southeastern U.S., affecting over 128 million people. Santorini Island, Greece More than 11,000 people hurriedly left the Greek island of Santorini due to an intense swarm of earthquakes. Seismic activity in the region began on January 24. The earthquake epicenters were located along a tectonic fault near the Santorini and Kolumbo volcanoes. On February 1, the frequency and intensity of the tremors increased sharply, and within three days, the island was shaking every few minutes. Iceland On January 2, a series of underground tremors was recorded near the Grettirvatn volcano, lasting about 40 minutes. Notably, the last eruption of this volcanic system occurred in the 10th century AD. On January 14, a powerful swarm of earthquakes was detected in the northwestern part of the Bardarbunga caldera, with the strongest tremor reaching a magnitude of 5.1.
